What is Jazz?

A Jazz  Improvisational Primer

The Hawaii International Jazz Festival cancels remaining concerts for 2007, for the purpose of reevaluating its future concert events, jazz clinics and "Visual Jazz" art contest. The cancellation follows the death of the festival's founder Abe Weinstein. Festival organizers are in discussion for a proposed all day jazz festival tentatively set for Spring 2008. For additional information, contact festival representative Dana Fujikake at (808) 941-9974, or email Updates will soon be available.

About Hawaii International Jazz Festival

Founded by Abe Weinstein in 1993, the Festival is dedicated to providing cultural enrichment to Hawaii residents and visitors through the wonderful American art form of jazz music and to providing music education opportunities and experiences for Hawaii’s youth and people of all ages. The HIJF plays a vital role in Hawaii’s cultural and musical education landscape. HIJF honors & perpetuates the history of jazz in our Islands dating back to the early 1920s at the Moana & Royal Hawaiian Hotels, and Downtown Honolulu venues when the irresistible influence of Swing partnered with the melodic Hawaiian tunes to create our own indigenous Hawaiian Jazz. This legacy is accomplished through “Mele no ka oi,” and the major two-day summertime HIJF concerts, as well as the Kapolei HIJF and the Windward Community College HIJF. The HIJF has brought 100s of world famous jazz artists to Hawaii, and has presented over 100 world-class concerts.
