The Killing Fields
March 18, 2008 at 5:07 AM
I think leaving off films like The Bedford Incident, Waterloo, and Enemy at the Gates lessens the overall quality of this list. Duck Soup isn't a war movie, neither is Casablanca. Did whoever added these actually watch them?
March 17, 2008 at 5:31 PM
I am a little late to this game. I must say there are some major flaws to this list, many have already pointed them out. th I am glad to see Paths of Glory and Letters Froms Iwo Jima at the top of the list. (Our nest president needs to ease up on the patriotic rheotic.) With that said how can you ignore Tora Tora Tora and include that stinker Midway? Seriously!! Could someone who made this list explain that one to me please?
March 6, 2008 at 5:52 PM
The Alamo. I love John Wayne and think he was great in "The Searchers" -but the Alamo was terrible.
March 3, 2008 at 11:07 AM
DR.STRANGELOVE.

ARE YOU KIDDING DUCK SOUP

THE GOOD,THE BAD AND THE UGLY.

As a historian, I was disappointed in the magazine. Casablanca, a war movie? It may have been one of my favorite movies, but if it is a war movie, where is Doctor Zhivago? Too many movie critics in the selection committee. Talk about the cinematic aspects, yes. But, you needed more historical context. And the ranking? Apocalypse Now beat Full Metal Jacket? The best Vietnam War movie, We Were Soldiers, is not even on the list. Other real war movies that you missed were, Saints and Soldiers, Enemy at the Gates, A Midnight Clear, To End All War, Hamburger Hill, The Great Raid, Last Samuri, When Trumpets Fade, Hell is For Heros, Horse Soldiers, The Devils Brigade, Tora Tora Tora, Windtalkers and Band of Brothers. I won't even discuss Duck Soup. I think you should try again and give us a free copy to cover our cost of this failed venture.

The African Queen - an outstanding movie, but shouldn't be on this list.
February 21, 2008 at 10:58 AM
I din't agree that a movie like Mash should have been included. Korea was no laughing matter. Four films that should have been on your list include, Command Decision, Objective Burma, Merrill's Marauders and We Were Soldiers. The performances of Clark Gable, Jeff Chandler, Errol Flynn, Mel Gibson and other cast members were outstanding. Thanks for the opportunity.

LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA. LET US SPEAK THE TRUTH HERE. WE DO NOT SHOW SYMPATHY TO A NATION THAT TRIED TO KILL US!!!PLATOON, APOCALYPSE NOW, AND FULL METAL JACKET. ALL FOUR OF THESE MOVIES SAY ONLY ONE THING. THAT MODERN AMERICANS HAVE NO RESPECT OR HONEST SUPPORT FOR THEIR MEN AND WOMEN IN THE UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES AND THAT WE WOULD RATHER SURRENDER OUR COUNTRY TO ANY ENEMY FORCE THAN TO HAVE TO GIVE OFF OUR LAZY ASSES AND PREVENT TYRANNY FROM TAKING OVER. ENOUGH WITH THIS: FEELING SORRY FOR THE ENEMY! I AM JUST GLAD THAT I AM NOT PART OF THIS LIBERAL AGENDA. I WAS THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN THE OVERALL SELECTION.

LETTERS OF IWO JIMA. LET US SPEAK THE TRUTH HERE. WE DO NOT SHOW SYMPATHY TO A NATION THAT TRIED TO KILL US!!!PLATOON, FULL METAL JACKET, AND APOCALYPSE NOW. ALL FOUR OF THESE FILMS ONLY SHOW ONE THING...WE DON'T SUPPORT AND RESPECT OUR MILITARY AND ALL THAT THEY HAVE ACCOMPLISHED. I AM JUST GLAD THAT I DO NOT FOLLOW YOUR LIBERAL AGENDA.
February 17, 2008 at 2:51 PM
I think "The Last Samurai" should have been included. It was a defining moment in Japanese history. A moment that changed future history.
February 16, 2008 at 7:42 AM
Duck Soup, an extremely entertaining comedy, by no stretch of the imagination, should be considered as a war film.
February 12, 2008 at 6:14 AM
Duck Soup - no comedies The African Queen - this was a stretch She Wore a Yellow Ribbon - come on guys Dr. Strangelove - Peter Sellers in multiple rolls doesn't lend to calling this a war movie The General - once again, slapstick comedy doesn't belong
February 11, 2008 at 10:54 AM
I agree that Midway, should not be on this list, but rather Tora, Tora, Tora. I also think Shindler's list should be replaced by the pianist (a much better film, directed by a man who acutally experienced The Holocaust first hand). If El Cid is on the list, then so should Gladiator, The 300 Spartans, Troy, Alexander etc... Ben Hur is not a war film, nor is The Searchers.
February 8, 2008 at 12:46 PM
How about The Gallant Hours(no battle scenes, but a great story of strategy by Halsey), or Task Force and Wings of Eagles(development of naval aviation). And if you were adding wartime comedy, I think Mr. Roberts would have been a better choice.
February 2, 2008 at 7:01 AM
Lists like this are not only subjective, but as always when Americans make lists .... nationalistic!! How can you you have a list of any great war films without including The Dambusters, Password is Courage, In which We Serve, The Battle of the River Plate, Sink The Bismark, The Cruel Sea, The Long and the Short and the Tall, Reach for the Sky, Waterloo, Zulu Dawn, Enemy at the Gates,Gallipoli, Forty Thousand Horesemen, The Light Horesemen, The Charge of the Light Brigade (David Lean version)... and the list goes on? Replace the following with the above: Duck Soup, the ludicrous Errol Flynn version of the Charge of the Light Bde and others which, even though they are great movies are not even war films like The Searchers, Casablanca and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly... Half the films on the list I would not have included. But then again ... I'm biased.
January 31, 2008 at 8:01 AM
Can't agree with some on your list but I would add "Tora, Tora, Tora", "Pearl Harbor", "Zulu Dawn" and instead of "Duck Soup" which is really a zany Marx Bros.comedy I'd substitute "Fort Apache" and how about "The Dam Busters", "Sink the Bismark" "Away All Boats" "The Wild Geese", and "Battle of the River Platte" "The Yangste Incident" maybe you should have made it The 200 Greatest War Movies"
January 27, 2008 at 9:06 AM
I bought the magazine 74—THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (1966) ?? In the actual magazine THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING(1975) is #74. On your website list it's THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY (1966). You obviously yanked the latter, a good move.
January 19, 2008 at 7:44 PM
The Good the Bad the Ugly, a good movie, but a war movie? Come on! I dont see: Master Comander Enemy at the Gates Blue Max The Great Escape The Great Raid Waterloo Band of Brothers Kelly's Heros Bridge at Remagen There are more.....who ever came up with the list, has no clue about war movies
January 18, 2008 at 4:45 PM
Thank you "rpm" for saying THEY WERE EXPENDABLE was the greatest WWII movie....which is TRUE !!!!!!!!!!!!!...Also it should have been in the top 10 !!!!!!!!!!....not 99 !!!
January 17, 2008 at 8:16 AM
There are many films that occured during war time such "Sound of Music" but they shouldn't be on the list of the greatest war films so I would remove for starters Duck Soup, Ben Hur, The Good the Bad and the ugly, Dr. Strangelove, MASH,Schlinders list,Casablanca,Notorious, the searchers,Thin red line, Downfall,Paths of Glory, and African Queen.
January 16, 2008 at 8:11 AM
I know that the 100 list is subjective but I would drop the comedies & satire films: Duck Soup MASH The General Hail the Conquering Hero Dr. Strangelove Drop the western: The Searchers See the add list for replacements.
January 8, 2008 at 9:01 PM
As much as I love the Marx Bros. Duck Soup is a comedy, not a war movie as were others included on the list. Where is The Enemy Below, or PT 109, or Air Force, The Immortal Sergeant, Bridges At Toko Ri,Von Ryan's Express etc. These are genuine war movies and should be included not only on this list, but any other list of top 100 war movies!!!! Would be nice to see another magazine and put the vote to the readers as to their favorites and then list those.
January 6, 2008 at 11:45 AM
I dont know why Casablanca was included it was more of a love story set during WW2 not much war action going on there.
January 5, 2008 at 6:50 PM
Tora Tora Tora needs to be included and Flags of our Fathers needs to be deleted. The book was loaded with errors and made for a terrible movie.
January 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM
I too agree "Glory" is simply revisionist history.
January 4, 2008 at 10:11 AM
Lists of this sort are a great starting point for discussion. However, they need to be credible and this list sadly is not. A few good choices at the top: Battle of Algiers Letters from Iwo Jima (I think superior to Flags...) Glory Wings Lawrence of Arabia (Perhaps should have been #1 or 2) Obvious ommissions: Tora, Tora, Tora Sand Pebbles Sands of Iwo Jima Kelly's Heroes The Great Raid Hell is for Heroes Obvious errors: Duck Soup (politics, not war) The Third Man (war? where?) Midway (but not Tora, Tora, Tora???) Ulzana's Raid The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly The Searchers (westerns are a seperate category, and while these are fine films they do not focus on the military aspects of the Indian Wars - for this same reason She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is appropriate on this list, as Dances With Wolves might be.) Films terribly undervalued: The Best Years of Our Lives (Top 10 without question) They Were Expendable (#99 - perhaps the best WWII film ever made) The Battle of Britain (# 90 - no film ever worked so hard or spent so much money to achieve this level of accuracy) The Train (#64 - as gripping and realistic a war film as ever made with a tremendous cinema verite production) I wonder how the list was developed. Needed a few more thinkers I suspect...
December 26, 2007 at 2:48 PM
Duck Soup?!!! Why not "Go For Broke (1951, starring Van Johnson)
December 25, 2007 at 10:17 AM
How could Midway be on the list--what a stinker of a movie! I saw it as a 9-year-old in the theater and was swept away by the excitement, but even at that age I found the combat sequences fake and the inaccuracies really annoying. Caught it again on TV recently and I couldn't believe how badly it had aged. I was embarrassed that I ever liked it at all--even as a fourth-grader!
December 23, 2007 at 11:52 PM
Just because it doesn't include battle does not make it a non-war movie. Plenty of things in war don't happen on the field of battle. All that aside several ones that are supposedly historical on the list played havoc with real history. Although some got the spirit of the conflict correct. As for some of the ones people mentioned here they are incorrect if you think they are not war movies. The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly has one of the most realistic Civil War battles in the West included in it. The Sea Hawk covers the time just before the Spanish Armada when England and Spain were battling for control of the New World. I would not have included Braveheart as high as #67 considering how much Mel Gibson hacked up real history by mixing elements of the battles of Stirling Bridge and Falkirk together into an incomprehensible mess. As for Glory it is the closest to real history in Civil War movies. Too bad mini-series don't count as Gettysburg would be at the top of the list for that.
December 21, 2007 at 6:17 PM
The Searchers?? A great movie, one of my favorites, but NOT a war movie. The same goes for The Third Man, which is a noir cult favorite and all, but not really a WAR movie at all. I think The Big Red One is overrated; but Midway?? A bloated, boring Hollywood stinker;and Letters from Iwo Jima is much inferior to Eastwood's bookend movie, Flags of Our Fathers. Movies I would have included on the list of 100 Great(est?) War movies include: The Cruel Sea Sink the Bismarck Run Silent, Run Deep The Steel Helmet (Korean War) Attack (1956) with Jack Palance and Eddie Albert--showing heroism AND cowardice among US troops. Still, you made a fine list, with good text and commentary, and I thoroughly enjoyed agreeing, and disagreeing, with your choices!
December 20, 2007 at 1:37 PM
Duck Soup (you got to be kidding), The Searchers (great movie but a western) The Sea Hawk (another great movie but a pirate movie), Notorious (a spy thriller), & the list goes on. A large portion of your list wouldn't even be considered war movies. Check anywhere and many would be listed under different genres.
December 18, 2007 at 5:56 PM
Castle Keep and The Bridges At Toko-Ri shouldn't be on the Top 100
December 18, 2007 at 10:17 AM
Duck Soup? You gotta be kidding? Why wasn't Were Eagles Dare, Heroes of Telemark, Sand Pebbles, Tora, Tora, Tora not included. Midway was a flop, no drama. To not include The War Lovers and Sands of Iwo Jima makes me wonder if this wasn't just a dart board pick.
December 18, 2007 at 7:58 AM
Duck soup, and the Good, the Bad, and the ugly
December 17, 2007 at 6:14 PM
When AFI published its list of "100 Greatest American Movies" about 10 yr. ago, one movie critic said that such lists are valuable only because they get people talking, discussing and arguing passionately about movies. So it is with THIS list of "greatest war movies" ... this is a list guaranteed to satisfy few, and tick of many! With that in mind: Where is "Sands of Iwo Jima" ... "Band of Brothers" ... "The War Lover" ... "Hell is For Heroes"? And as others have asked on this page: Where is "The Sand Pebbles" . . . and why the western "The Searchers" and the comedy "Hail Conquering Hero"? You are trying to prove you're "artistic" or "intellectual" by including some international films known mostly to film scholars ... and that you're "hip" or "ironic" by including "Duck Soup"!
December 17, 2007 at 2:47 PM
Mr. John Heimel, Sir, I say this with all due respect; if you have any understanding of War, then you would know that it is always political and provisional. You named The Sand Pebbles, Khartoum & the Blue Max as omissions… Think about it… I can say the same about Gallipoli, Tuskegee Airman & The Lost Command. They are all the same; the different is “it’s just a movie” and not War.
December 16, 2007 at 8:04 PM
Duck Soup definately shouldn't be on the list or Ulzana's Raid
December 16, 2007 at 7:21 AM
I do not believe that " A Bridge to Far " is on your list . This was a poor sequel to " The Longest Day" You missed two of the finest in " The Cruel Sea " and " The Password Is Courage"
December 15, 2007 at 2:39 PM
Duck Soup, Casablanca, The African Queen,The General are all fine movies, but belong nowhere in the top 100 WAR movie list.
December 14, 2007 at 3:19 PM
Paths of Glory was politacal, not war. Glory was revisionist history. Kagemusha is impossible. Did YOU watch it? Duck Soup. Schindler's List. Winds of War was better. Best Years of our Lives. Dr Strangelove, To Helen Back. Ecch! She Wore a Yellow Ribbon. Downfall. You really should have iincluded Winds of War. Enemy at the Gate. Bataan, Kingdom of Heaven and Tora Tora Tora. But your whole list goes down the tubes with the ommision of Sand Pebbles & Khartoum. Where is Blue Max?
December 13, 2007 at 5:01 AM
uh what about Kingdom of Heaven. Its a great movie and to my knowledge its one of the only good crusader movies. Or 300; the spartans are just bad to the max
December 8, 2007 at 2:55 AM
The Big Red One -- pathetic, pathetic, pathetic to include a 100 year old buck sgt commanding All American Clean Kids, likely none of whom were ever on active duty in real life - the whole thing seemed a made for the stage production
December 7, 2007 at 8:16 PM
Midway should not be on this list if Tora Tora Tora, a far superior film, was left off.
December 2, 2007 at 3:17 PM
How can you include: Casablanca(takes place in a bar, come on) Colonel Blimp Dr Strangelove(takes place around a table) Notorious(too espionage) The Searchers(civil war end & movie starts, what gives) Great Escpate(most overrated WWII movie EVER) MASH(please...) Flags Of Our Fathers(great book, incoherrant movie; fyi not all Clint moives should be lauded)
December 2, 2007 at 7:31 AM
