The Cleveland Cavs had a great season with numerous highlights, the first being, Lebron James and company making the playoffs for the first time since 1998. They played very well beating the Washington Wizards in six games and pushing the Detroit Piston to a game seven only to fall to them 79-61. It was James’ first time in the playoffs.

As a thank you to a great season, and to hopefully lure James into extending his contract, owner Dan Gilbert placed an add in all the major newspapers thanking the fans for their support. At the end of the ad, it says they plan to intend signing a “key” player. The player is James, who, if signs will extend his contract to the 2011-12 season.

The Cleveland Cavs could have made it further into the playoffs but tragedy fell on one of the players. Guard, Larry Hughes, missed 11 games during the playoffs to mourn the death of his little brother. They could’ve definitely used him. The only player who really showed up to play was Lebron James. Playing against a team like the Detroit Pistons, everyone on the team needs to contribute significantly.

As far as the upcoming year is looking, the Cleveland Cavs picked up a fourth year option on the contract of Coach Mike Brown. Brown is the sixth coach for the Cleveland Cavs in six seasons. He made the playoffs in his first year relying heavily on the play of Lebron James. Starting his career with the Denver Nuggets breaking down videotape, Brown's biggest strengths are his communication skills, which are vital in a league controlled by its high-salaried players. Brown also has a strong working relationship with General Manager Danny Ferry, whom he coached in San Antonio.

Players whose future is up in the air are Drew Gooden and Flip Murray. Both played noteworthy roles but re-signing and finding time for them to play will be problems. As far as Gooden goes, he is a starter, but his minutes were cut back with the addition of Donyell Marshall and the emergence of Anderson Varejao. He is still viewed as a big part of the club though. As for Flip, if Larry Hughes is healthy, he obviously gets the nod at the shooting guard position. The Cavaliers were extremely successful, both in the second half of the season and in the playoffs with Flip in the starting lineup, but his role with Cleveland to start next season would probably be as a sixth man. Whether or not he’s comfortable in that role will be half the battle of bringing him back.

In a very competitive division with the Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Chicago Bulls, and Milwaukee Bucks, the Cleveland Cavs are going to have to meet expectations and play much better than last year. Lebron James, who is only 21 years old and the team’s franchise player, will play a major role in accomplishing the organization’s goals.
