Troubleshooting a Memory Stick Duo™

  • Make sure you are inserting the Memory Stick Duo™ properly, in the direction of the arrow, with the writing facing away from you. Try removing it and reinserting.
  • Visually check to make sure the Memory Stick Duo™ is not damaged.

If the PSP® system does not recognize the Memory Stick Duo™: Back to top


  • Make sure you are using an officially licensed Memory Stick Duo™. The quality of unlicensed memory sticks cannot be guaranteed.
  • If the Memory Stick Duo™ was formatted by a computer, the PSP® might not recognize it. After copying important data to your computer, reformat the Memory Stick Duo™ using a PSP®. For more information, see Fomatting a Memory Stick Duo™.
  • Make sure the Memory Stick Duo™ is properly inserted, in the direction of the arrow, with the writing facing away from you. Try removing it and reinserting.
  • Make sure the Memory Stick Duo™ connector is clean. If not, the data might not load properly. Wipe the connector with a cotton swab.
  • Make sure the Memory Stick Duo™ is compatible with the PSP®.

  • The Memory Stick Duo™ content might be saved in the incorrect folder.
    • All content must be saved to the folder specified for that content. For example, music files must be saved to the MUSIC folder and video files must be saved to the VIDEO folder.
    • Files saved anywhere other than their specific folders are not recognized or accessible on the PSP®. For more information, see About Memory Stick Duo™ Folder Structure.
  • Make sure there is enough free space on the Memory Stick Duo™ to save data. For more information, see System Check.
  • If possible, test the Memory Stick Duo™ on another PSP®:
    • If the Memory Stick Duo™ still does not function properly, it might need to be replaced.
    • If the Memory Stick Duo™ does function properly, the PSP® might need repairs. See How to Obtain Service.
