X-Travaganza Events Heat Up

In the depths of winter, heat is rising around X-Travaganza. The annual dinner-auction has grown to include many facets, including a pair of events that wrapped up over the weekend.

The fourth annual Texas Hold ‘Em poker tournament Feb. 23 netted about $7,000. Tony Venosa (’91) beat out more than 70 other players – including about 40 walk-up customers - to capture a $1,400 first prize, some of which he shared with the second- and third-place players.

Sam’s Club in Monfort Heights donated food for the evening and the tourney featured a silent auction and second-chance side games.

“What makes it successful, of course, is the people,” said Margo Locaputo, X-Travaganza. “The chairmen come, all the people from our office, from the school, come down and help us make sure it runs smoothly. And then you have all the people who want to play and have fun. It’s a fun night.”

About 24 hours after the last deck was shuffled, X-Travaganza’s online auction closed in a flurry of bidding – about $6,000 worth in the last half hour alone - as people tried to secure one of 407 available items. The online auction raised about $60,000, up $9,000 from the 2007 auction when there were 10 more items up for bid.

“I read the average online auction only does about $11,000 total and I couldn’t believe that with $6,000 in the last half hour,” Margo said. “Everything did very well, especially all the St. X items. It was just phenomenal. We’ve learned doing this the last couple years what will sell and fortunately we have some great places and people where we can go to get the things people want.”

The Grand Raffle – another key component of X-Trav – offers chances to win cash prizes of $5,000, $10,000 and $20,000. Tickets are $100 each or three for $250. The Grand Raffle has run up against some hard luck with the winter weather; two nights of raffle phonothons have been cancelled by snow. Still, chances for the Grand Raffle are available by calling 761-7815, ext. 113 or 117.

Coming soon is Razzle Dazzle, aka First Night, set for Friday, March 7 in the intramural gym. The informal party from 7 to 10 p.m. the evening before X-Trav promises to be fun with entertainment by members of Theater Xavier, games of chance, food, drinks and a 130-item silent auction with items like tickets to the touring production of Jersey Boys and a football helmet signed by every member of the 2007 state championship football team.

The following night, Saturday March 8, is the main event as Broadway X-Citement fills the Berning Gymnasium. The upscale dinner auction begins with cocktail and hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 and the live auction to start at 7:30 p.m. Among the big-ticket items this year are a New York theater package for four, a New York media package for two, two different puppies, final round Ryder Cup tickets and a chance to play the Valhalla course and a three-person Sea-Do personal watercraft.
