Foundation Degree in Film and Video, with optional 1 year BA(Hons) Top-up

The Foundation Degree in Film and Video encompasses a wide range of practical and conceptual approaches to moving image across a range of platforms and for a range of purposes. Film and video production is an important sector within the creative industries, and the course has been designed to lead to a number of relevant career pathways.

The course aims to help students realise their potential in moving image creation and production, and encourages the exploration of traditional and developing forms of film and video. These include production for ‘mainstream’ cinema and television, ‘guerrilla’ filmmaking, and mobile and on-line content.  These are approached in the context of theories of narrative and story-telling, and foregrounding of the dual role played by pictures and sound. As well as narrative filmmaking, opportunities also exist for involvement in non-narrative forms such as video and sound installation, and audio-visual performance (‘VJing’).

The content, aims and learning outcomes of the course balance conceptual and creative skills with an understanding of issues surrounding the medium. Students are required to critically reflect upon their own work and that of other practitioners in order to develop their insight into the possibilities of the medium.

Work-related learning and the development of industry awareness are vital aspects of the course. Students have the opportunity to undertake work placements in the creative industries and to engage with ‘live’ projects and productions.  Team working is an important aspect of the course, and this reflects practice in film, video and other creative industries. The course also offers opportunities for collaborative working with students from related disciplines at the School.

Students who successfully complete a Foundation Degree at the School are able to progress to BA (Hons) Year Three, subject to the fulfilment of our Year Three entry criteria.

The FdA/BA Film and Video is based at EPIC. Visit the EPIC Site for further details.
