THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN has fought several classic villains so far, including the Vulture, the Enforcers, Electro, and the Lizard. Now in ‘Market Forces’ a new menace arises in the guise of the Shocker to fulfill a contract to take Spidey out the way of the Big Man’s plans for the New York underworld. This new villain is actually Montana from the Enforcers in a new souped up costume built specifically to take out the web head.

It’s interesting that the cartoon decided to use one of the Enforcers as the secret identity behind the Shocker instead of making him Herman Schultz. As an unsuccessful burglar, Herman Shultz, with a gifted skill working with tools, developed, in prison, what were to become the infamous vibro-shock units that he would use to try to advance his already criminal ways to a new level. Of course, the quilted suit that is supposed to insulate him against his own vibro-shock units has been the source of Spider ridicule sine the beginning, and in the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN universe he doesn’t even get to be the bad guy for one issue and instead has been taken down several times in the first few pages.

Making Montana into the Shocker saves the writers from having to come up with a completely different origin for a character that pretty much is a second tier villain anyways. This also allows for things in the cartoon to tie together a lot smother than previous versions of the animated adventures of the web head have been.

The most important thing about this episode is the set up with Hammerhead making a deal to have Norman Osborn manufacture super villains to put up against Spider-man in the future. This convention is an extremely useful way to set up the introduction and creation of new villains as the series progresses and of course the introduction of the Green Goblin himself a bit further down the road.

Even the Shocker was more interesting on this show, so I continue to have high hopes for future episodes, characters, and villains. I know there are at least two seasons of this show ordered so far, and I really hope it sticks around even longer.
