(CNN) -- At least four people were injured when a vehicle exploded in a restive Russian republic on Monday, a Russian news agency reported.

Security forces in the Ingushetia region have been targeted by insurgents in recent months.

The "unknown explosive device" detonated near a bank in the city of Nazran, the Interfax news agency reported.

The bomb had been planted underneath a Mercedes belonging to a law-enforcement officer, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

It said the bomb had the equivalent of one kilogram of TNT.

Nazran is in the Russian republic of Ingushetia, where an upsurge in violence in recent months has targeted local police officers and security forces.

The total of wounded people differed in other reports on Monday.

The Associated Press said the blast occurred when a police officer used a remote control to unlock the car, which belonged to him, according to the regional Investigative Committee.

The officer and another policeman who was with him were seriously injured, AP said, and three passersby were also injured.

AP also cited another report from the Emergency Situations Ministry's southern Russia branch, which said six people were injured.

In January, Russia's Federal Security Service launched a counter-terrorism operation in Ingushetia after receiving information that "terrorists had been preparing a series of attacks on administrative buildings, police and citizens in public places," the RIA Novosti news agency reported then.
