O'Neil: Belmont lets Duke game slip away

Dana O'Neil | ESPN.com (8 days ago)
Duke breathed a sigh of relief when Justin Hare's game-winning heave clanked off the rim. Belmont was angry it let the game slip away. Such is the life for a Duke program that is no longer feared by 15-seeds, writes Dana O'Neil.

ESPN's Take
Wake Forest, Miami and UNC proved the Blue Devils aren't invincible, but Duke clearly distanced itself from the rest of the ACC with its discipline, defense and three-point shooting.

Duke's perimeter game and pressure defense helped it compensate for the lack of a true inside player this season, but having Brian Zoubek -- who missed nine games with a broken left foot -- healthy for the postseason helps.

Senior DeMarcus Nelson, who was named the top defensive player in the league and usually guards the opponent's best perimeter player, leads the team in scoring. (except on Senior Night against the Tar Heels.) Five players finished the regular season with double-digit scoring averages, including Jon Scheyer -- one of the best players in the country off the bench.

No other team in the league hoisted up more three's (282) than Duke and only Miami made more than 38.7 percent of them. Greg Paulus kept Duke in the game against UNC in the regular-season file, and his three-point shooting has been a catalyst all season. Over 70 percent of his made field goals have come from beyond the arc (72-of-101).

As long as Duke continues to stay healthy, there's no reason the Blue Devils' shouldn't have an extended stay in the NCAA tournament, making last season's first-round exit an afterthought.

A RARE LOSS FOR DUKE

Before Saturday's loss, Duke had been 30-1 under Mike Krzyzewski in the first two rounds as a #1 or #2 seed. The Blue Devils' only other loss came as a #2 seed against #10 Providence in the second round in 1997.
