OPERATION SPIDER WEB

To restore the law and order of the south-western Bangladesh, Coast Guard participated in Operation “SPIDER WEB”, along with Police, BDR and Ansar & VDP from 20 July to 14 August 2003. Bangladesh Coast Guard operated the revering sector. Coast Guard captured 02 Shot guns and apprehended 76 pirates.

ANTI-PIRACY OPERATION IN MEGHNA ESTUARY

A joint operation of police and Coast Guard, named “NIRAPOD JIBON” was launched from 21 Sep to 26 Oct 2005 to protect the coastal fishermen from the pirates. As a result, piracy reduced considerably. Bangladesh Coast Guard captured 02 single barreled gun, 01 pipe gun, 04 ram da(machete) and apprehended 57 pirates/smugglers.

OPERATION JATKA

Since its establishment, Coast Guard is working hard to protect the fishery resources from illegal fishery. Every year Bangladesh Coast Guard carries out operation JATKA to protect the famous Hilsha fry. In 2005, Coast Guard captured 3,445,490 mtr illegal net worth Tk-57,178,750/00. For this outstanding performance Bangladesh Coast Guard received “Gold Medal” and certificate on 09 August 2005.

COAST GUARD COMMISSIONED TWO PATROL BOATS

Bangladesh Coast Guard has commissioned 02 new ships named CGS PORTE GRANDE and CGS SHETGANG on 29 May 2006. The ships are named as per the earlier names of Chittagong port used by the Portuguese and the Arabs. The ships are constructed by Chittagong Port Authority and were officially handed over to CG by on 28 May 2006 in M/S Ananda Shipyard. The general information of the ships are as follows:

PROTECTION AGAINST ILLEGAL FERTILIZER TRAFFICKING

Bangladesh Coast Guard participated in a joint operation with Navy to eliminate the illegal trafficking of very essential fertilizer from 23 oct 2005. Bangladesh Coast Guard operated 07 stations among the 13 stations established by the joint force. The achievements are as follows:

PROTECTION OF AGIANST ENVIRONMENT POLLUTION

Bangladesh Cost Guard is responsible for the preventing the environment pollution in the water territory of Bangladesh according to the Gazette. Coast Guard is maintaining a vigilant eye while her regular patrol.


GOODWILL VISIT TO INDIA

From 22-25 January CGS RUPOSHI BANGLA and CGS TOWFIQ visited Haldia port of India. The ships sailed for Haldia on 21 January 2006 and reached on 22 January2006. There after the two Coast Guards exchanged their views in different subjects, exchanged various ceremonies and played a friendly volleyball match within 22-24 Jan 2006. On 25 Jan 2006, the two ships of Bangladesh Coast Guard participated in a joint operation with Indian Coast Guard Ship KRIPALANI, RAMADEVI, VAJRA, two air cushion vessels, one maritime aircraft and a maritime helicopter. The two Coast Guards performed various formation exercise, emergency medical evacuation exercise, ante-oil pollution exercise and search and rescue exercise. After the joint exercise in the afternoon the two Bangladesh Coast Guard ships left Haldia port and sailed for Bangladesh. On 26 Jan 2006 the ships returned to Chittagong port.

PROMOTION OF DG BANGLADESH COAST GUARD

The Director General (DG) of Bangladesh Coast Guard Commodore Sarwar Jahan Nizam, (C), ndu, psc, BN has been promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 21 June 2006 and Re-appointed as DG Coast Guard on same day. Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam was born on 29 January 1952 in a noble Muslim family in Chittagong. He joined Pakistan Navy in 1970 as a cadet and was commissioned on 01 June 1973 after repatriation from Pakistan with ante-dated seniority. Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam attended a good number of courses at home and abroad. He did his specialization course in Communication from UK in 1980. He graduated from Staff College Mirpur, Dhaka in 1986. He also did Higher Command Courses from National Defense University at Beijing, China and Senior Executive Course from USA in 1996 and 2002 respectively.

Admiral Sarwar Jahan Nizam held quite a good number of important civil and military appointments. He commanded all types of Naval Ships and Establishment during his long naval career. Admiral Nizam performed the duties of Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Operations) and Assistant Chief of Naval Staff (Personnel) at Naval Headquarters. He also performed as the Naval Area and Operational Commander of Chittagong and Khulna. He served as the Defence Adviser (DA) at Bangladesh High Commission at Colombo in Sri Lanka from 2000-2002. He was also the Commandant Marine Fisheries Academy, Chittagong. Admiral Nizam participated in International Naval Exercise in Mediterranean Sea onboard Turkish Navy ship in the year 1990. He has been holding the present appointment of the Director General Bangladesh Coast Guard under the Ministry of Home Affairs since 22 March 2005. A Soft spoken and well behaved Admiral Nizam is a widely traveled naval officer who has reputation of down to earth behavior pattern amongst his associates.

Admiral Nizam is basically a sports man and a keen Golfer. He is happily married and they have one daughter.
