Second Annual Awards Banquet

           On October 4, 2006, LaLSA held its Second Annual Awards Banquet.  The banquet honored the accomplishments of an outstanding Latino professional in the legal community and two distinguished alumni. 

           LaLSA awarded its 2006 Outstanding Latino Professional Award to Judge Sonia Sotomayor.  She sits on the United States Second Circuit Court of Appeals.  A Princeton University and Yale Law School graduate, she is currently one of the highest ranking Latinas in the United States’ judiciary.  With this award, LaLSA aimed to recognize her amazing professional accomplishments and continuing contributions to the Latino community.  Click here for  Judge Sotomayor’s full bio.

           Luisa Cabal, director of the International Program at the Center for Reproductive Rights, received the night’s first Distinguished Alumni Award.  A 1997 graduate of Columbia Law School’s LLM program,  Ms. Cabal has become a major force in promoting women’s rights in the developing world.  Click here for Ms. Cabal’s full bio.

           Benito Romano, partner at New York based Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, received the night’s second and final Distinguished Alumni Award.  Since graduating from Columbia in 1977, Mr. Roman worked for the majority of his career in the US Attorney’s Office.  At one time, he supervised over 160 attorneys in that office.  He leads a practice in complex criminal and civil litigation at Willkie Farr.  Click here for Mr. Roman’s full bio.
