PACKERS-SEAHAWKS POST GAME NOTES & QUOTES
- Today's paid attendance was 69,928.
- The Packers' defense today held the league's No. 1 offense, Seattle, to 245 yards, its second-lowest output on the year (194 at Philadelphia, Dec. 5). One week ago, the Packers' offense totaled 365 net yards, a season-high by an opponent of Chicago, the NFL's No. 1 defense entering the weekend (the Bears are currently playing at Minnesota).
- Brett Favre extended his NFL-record streak of seasons with at least 20 TD passes to 12. He entered the game with 19 and finished the season with 20 touchdown passes.
- Favre established a career high with 372 completions this season; his previous high was 363 in 1994. He entered today's game with 351 completions. With 383 as a team, the Packers also set their franchise record in the category (382 in 2004).
- Favre also set a career high with 607 passing attempts, surpassing his previous career high of 595. He came into the contest with 570 attempts. With 626 as a team, the Packers also set their franchise record in the category (609 in 1994).
- Green Bay ended Seattle's 11-game winning streak. Previously, the longest streak Green Bay had ever halted was a 10-game run by the Lions, at Detroit on Nov. 25, 1934, a 3-0 final. Lambeau Field's longest streak ever stopped was Denver's nine-game run in 1996.
- Donald Driver caught a pass in a 64th consecutive game. The streak is the second-longest in team history behind Sterling Sharpe's 103 (1988-94).
- Driver became only the fourth Packers player ever with an 85-reception season, joining Sterling Sharpe (1989, 1992-94), Robert Brooks (1995) and Javon Walker (2004). He entered the game with 80 catches and finished the season with a career-high 86 (previous high was 84 in 2004).
- Driver also set a career best with 1,221 receiving yards, breaking his previous best of 1,208. He had 1,103 yards entering the game.
- Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila led the team in sacks for a fifth consecutive season, tying Tim Harris' franchise record. Harris led the Packers in sacks each year from 1986-90.
- The Packers entered the weekend ranked first in the NFL against the pass and eighth overall. Awaiting results of the remaining games, the Packers are bidding to extend their NFL record by leading the league in passing defense for a 10th season (also 1947-48, 1962, 1964-68 and 1996). After giving up 147 net yards this afternoon, the team finished the year allowing just 167.5 yards per contest, the franchise's second-lowest figure since the league expanded to a 16-game schedule in 1978 (157.8 in 1978).
POST-GAME QUOTES
HEAD COACH MIKE SHERMAN:
(on how he perceives his future) "I'm going to wake-up tomorrow, come to work, probably get a work out in, try to start that process again and we'll go from there. The things you don't have control over, you don't worry about. I have control over what I do. I have control over my attitude, my perception, how I do things and you do the very best job you can. Other people have control over other things and you let them do their jobs."
(on if emotionally and mentally, he's glad the season is over) "No, I wish we could continue to play. I wish we were in the playoffs. I'm envious of the Seahawks that they can continue to play. I wish we could play more."
(on if it can be turned around as fast as it fell apart next season) "I like to be able to think how our season would have gone if we had not had the injuries that we've had. I felt very confident about Javon Walker, Ahman Green and company and a number of other players that we lost. Last year at this time people had made comments about Seattle being in this situation. They had all these free agents, they had all this transition going on, what's going to happen? They had some in-house changes, obviously Ted (Thompson) was one of them, who came here. There was a lot of flux going on there. I believe we can very easily get back to where we need to be, there's no doubt in my mind about that."
(on if keeping it fun with so many mistakes and penalties is a difficult balance for a coach) "It is, that's a good question. You have to be accountable for every mistake they make. We had a couple of new players make some mistakes today, we had an old player make a mistake today. They have to be accountable for their mistakes. You can never not let them be accountable for that, because that is their job to make that, they're paid to do that the right way and we're counting on them to do it the right way."
RUNNING BACK NOAH HERRON:
(on playing with the team out of the playoffs) "Any time, under any circumstance, you want to get a win. No matter who the team is - whether it's the Seahawks or someone else - a win always feels good."
(on his play today and learning the offense) "I'm starting to feel more and more comfortable, the more touches I get. I didn't have the luxury of the preseason here, but I feel pretty good. I have a good grasp (on the offense), so we'll just go from there."
(on playing with Brett Favre) "Not too many people can say they took a handoff from the best quarterback ever. I wish him the best, and hope that he comes back. He is Green Bay."
KICKER RYAN LONGWELL:
(on if he savored this game) "Rob (Davis) and I went through it together. We ran onto the field and soaked up the last field goal together, took a picture on the field after the game. Then I brought (my wife) Sarah onto the field and took our picture on the field after the game. I don't know what's going to happen. It's a great way to go out."
(on playing with Brett Favre) "The guy's got nothing to prove. He's the best quarterback I've ever seen. He can certainly go out in style. We'll wait and see, but it's pretty emotional. It's weird to think of the Green Bay Packers without him. Eventually it'll get that way, whether its next year or 10 years down the road, it's going to be that way. It's hard to imagine a team running out there without a No. 4."
(on whether he'll be a Green Bay Packer next year) "We need to come to an agreement. They need to want us back, first off...We'll wait and see if they call, and when they call we'll go from there. Sarah and I are very excited about the next chapter in our lives, and that very well might be here."
TACKLE MARK TAUSCHER:
(on the season) "From a record standpoint, pretty bad. From a team standpoint - being able to stick together and do certain things...You learn to respect your teammates, the guys that stick with it and tried to make improvements and get over the hump. Those are guys you give a lot of respect to."
(on teammates changing over the years) "You become close with people you play with for a long time because you put in so much time and work. There's only a certain amount of people who understand what we go through. With the contracts and things, you miss that. There's guys that left last year that we'll miss and they'll be guys next year that are going to be gone that we'll miss. It's the nature of the business and it does make these last couple days bittersweet."
QUARTERBACK AARON RODGERS:
(on playing with Brett Favre) "We're 4-12 this season, I'll never forget that and I'll never forget him. Hopefully he'll be back for one more year to enlighten my vocabulary."
(on taking the last snap) "They told me if (the Seahawks) didn't score, we're going to try and get Brett a curtain call. They didn't use there timeout until right there with 41 seconds left. It was the perfect opportunity to come in and take a knee and for Brett to get the respect he deserves."
(on giving Brett Favre the game ball) "He's the player of the game, regardless if this was his last game or not. Coach was going to give it to him anyway, so now he has two game balls. Obviously, the fans came to see him, hoping it's not his last game but knowing that it could be. He has nothing left to prove. At the same time, he still has the desire and the ability...Although you might not believe me, I hope he comes back."
DEFENSIVE TACKLE GRADY JACKSON:
(on the last game) "It's a good thing to start off the beginning of the year. We have a win under our belt and we're undefeated this year."
(on the business side of football) "It's hard to go home right now because it feels like we should be in the playoffs or getting ready for next week. It's been a nightmare season and hopefully we can wake up from this dream. Hopefully I'll be back because I like it here. The guy's are like family in the locker room. It's a great place to be."
LINEBACKER NICK BARNETT:
(on Brett Favre) "I hope he comes back. But that's a decision to be made by him and the organization. I don't know who makes it. But I hope he comes back. If he doesn't, we have to move on and keep doing what we have to do."
(on Coach Sherman) "I definitely believe Coach Sherman has the support of his players. He has the support of me. He's a great coach. Unfortunately, we didn't have the year we wanted to have, but it doesn't take anything away from him being a good coach."
SEAHAWKS HEAD COACH MIKE HOLMGREN:
(on tailoring his first half game plan for running back Shaun Alexander) "I was hoping that he didn't need as many yards quite honestly, but then last night Tiki Barber went for a whole bunch. We wanted him to have the record, he wanted to have the record, the linemen wanted the record for him and so in the first half we were kind of playing to get him the ball and hoping to get him the record, and that was done. I am very happy about that and so was he."
(on if he was concerned about the performance of his defense) "I wouldn't look at today's game for much of anything that way. I think there are some things if we made errors, then we must certainly correct those things, but I think that if you take the emotional factor out of any football game I think you are in trouble. I don't think we were on edge today. I think we went out there and played, and we played hard I think, but I trust that we will be a little more on edge for the playoffs."
(on if there are similarities between this team and the 1996 Packers) "I think the things that are the same are that this team gets along very well. They have fun in the clubhouse, in the locker room, and that team did too. We had some characters that kept guys loose and light, and we have the same. That is a similarity. The second thing that I really believe is that both the teams were pretty unselfish when it comes to professional football. I think while both of them had great players wanting to do great things, both of them had the ability to be happy for their teammate getting something done. I think that makes for a good chemistry and makes for a really good enthusiastic team. The one word I would use for both of them is team."
SEAHAWKS QUARTERBACK MATT HASSELBECK:
(on summing up Seattle's season) "Obviously anytime you lose a game it is disappointing and I think we are all disappointed about the loss, but we had a great season. We won our division, we clinched a first round bye very early on, and we clinched home field advantage throughout the playoffs as long as we are playing. Those were the goals we set out to do this year."
(on what he learned from Brett Favre during his time in Green Bay) "I think it would be impossible to just say one or two things. I go back to the advice I got my first day here from Andy Reid who was my quarterbacks coach and he said that you can learn a lot from this guy, you can learn what you choose to learn. He said don't study his fundamentals or throwing mechanics, or those kinds of things because he gets away with things that other guys don't get away with. He is that talented. But what you can learn from this guy is the thing people call intangibles like his leadership style and the way he motivates guys around him, and the way he has the ability to intimidate the opponent without saying a word. He is one of a kind."
SEAHAWKS RUNNING BACK SHAUN ALEXANDER:
(on if it is fulfilling to win the rushing title) "It was never like that for me. I think it is more fulfilling to be 13-3 and to know that we are in the playoffs and we don't have to play next week. Those are more fulfilling than the rushing title. The scoring title, the touchdowns, I do like that. That's pretty cool."
