About Brierley Hill

Brierley Hill plays an important role in the network of centres in Dudley.  Home to the Waterfront business park, the Merry Hill Shopping Centre and a traditional High Street, Brierley Hill has reinvented itself from the steel and pie town of the 1970s.

The town has a population of around 28,000 with most residents living in the estates to the west that include Hawbush and Pennsett, alongside the Chapel Street estate and other residential blocks in and around the centre.

Located in the centre of the borough Brierley Hill is surrounded by incredible wildlife-rich open spaces including Fens Pools in Pensnett, Saltwells in Quarry Bank and the canals in Buckpool.

Running through and around the town the network of canals offer pleasant walking or cycling, while the dramatic Nine Locks is a series of eight locks that take narrowboats up to Brierley Hill and down to Stourbridge.

The town has a number of wonderful public houses most notably the Bull and Bladder, more correctly called The Vine, where Bathham’s Bitter is brewed on the premises.  The bitter was once described in a real ale festival programme as ‘the nectar of the gods’ – high praise indeed.
