TVs "The Simpsons" go to high school

The April, 2001 Auctioneer Magazine

Simpsons Poster Portland, Oregon — When the Lincoln High School Booster Club asked alumni to support their annual fundraising auction, they were surprised to find TVs most famous family, The Simpsons, eager to help.

Matt Groening, artist and "The Simpsons" creator, donated a framed poster of all the characters who have appeared on the show. The poster was made into a one-of-a-kind with a personalized drawing of Bart & Lisa Simpson. Groening also signed and dated the poster. Under his name he wrote "Lincoln High School Escapee, 1972."

Auctioneer JillMarie Wiles, CAI, of Beneficial Auction Service, Canby, Oregon, sold the poster for $2,700. The high bidder then donated the item back to the high school, where it could be permanently displayed. In just 90 minutes, Wiles also sold a week's vacation in a Swiss chalet in Geneva ($3,500), front row tickets at Yankee Stadium ($3,500), tickets to the David Letterman Show ($1,100) and other donated items.

In the end, Wiles helped the school raise $112,000. "This was such an incredible evening, people are already talking about next year's auction," says Kaki Brenneman, the auction chairperson. More than 400 people attended the charity auction, which supports the academic, sports and extra-curricular activities at the high school.
