IGN PS2 Best of 2003 Awards!
Everyone seems to agree that the year 2003 was an excellent annum for well-polished, quality games. Unlike several previously sketchy years in which we saw unbelievable, knockout titles that stood head and shoulders above seriously crappy rush-jobs, this last year was the middle child of game development. Nearly everything was a sequel and almost every game released this fall was solidly designed, built, and well thought out. Didn't we want games that were less rushed, more polished and well tested? The year 2003 brought them in.
Looking through the PlayStation 2 lineup, however, many critics and even fans learned that the lion's share of the best games were available on multiple consoles. More importantly, perhaps the best version wasn't on the PS2. There are dozens of examples, but games such as Beyond Good & Evil, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne were superior on the Xbox or PC. But gamers who looked hard enough learned that EA's games were exclusively online for PS2, and without a doubt, the PS2 was the winner in the venerable platformer category.
Overall though, 2003 proved that the PS2 is still a great gaming system, and has a few good years left in it. Now take a look at what we thought were the best of the best in 2003.
