Description
This is a fan-made modification for NWN2-OC that adds romantic dialogues to an existing character, Bishop.

Compatibility

This mod is designed to work with NWN2-OC with or without MotB expansion pack. Due to the nature of the Electron Engine, the mod will be incompatible with any other mod using the same NWN2-OC files. Any and all mods for NWN2-OC that will want to use the same files and want to maintain the compatibility are free to take the OC files modified by this mod and apply further changes to them.

Installation

Bishop’s Romance comes with two .rar files. The Bishop_Romance_V0X.rar file has to be un-rared into your

Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2\Override

directory (NOT the My Documents one!)

and the BR_Music.rar file has to be un-rared into your

Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2\Music

directory (NOT the My Documents one!).

Contents

This is a modification for the NWN2-OC that adds new dialogues, expansions to the existing dialogues and the flirt-pack for Bishop. Flirt-packs are accessed via the main question menu, where the new option (Flirt with Bishop) will appear. The flirts differ between Act II and Act III. Two or three talks are ‘hidden’ and will appear if certain events occurred and you tried to flirt with Bishop. You do not have to be evil-aligned or have high influence with Bishop to romance him. The mod does not modify the influence over the character, in order not to upset the game’s balance. The last meeting with Bishop still requires high influence with him to eventually obtain a different conclusion. The first lines of NWN1-style talks are voiced, and the cutscenes are fully voiced.

Thanks and Acknowledgements

First, a big thanks to the wonderful community at The Gibberlings Three. Thanks to this still active and vibrant Infinity Engine modding community that welcomed their wayward pervy Electron fancier.

Thanks to the fanfiction.net community that took interest in the project while it was still a pile of dialogues and ideas, nowhere near becoming a mod.

Thanks to the good folk at the BioWare forums for encouragement, help and answering this newb’s coding questions.

A special gratitude is reserved for Dirtywick for catching the bug that almost killed the mod and drove me insane!

And, of course, a standing ovation to the following people whose participation and good will made this mod possible:

Editor: Krista (aka sininsilence)

Music Themes: Kat Bella (aka the acefes)

Voice-Actors:
Bishop - Rob Dupuis (aka the Wizard)
Casavir - Jackie Cooper
Grobnar - Daniel Roberts
Luskan Assassin - Shugojin
Shandra - Wynne

Testers: Churr, Simi Parthenopaeus, rachellespen, swimhard2787, Nhadaliinia

Rogue Dao's Lip Flappers were used for the facial animations during the conversations.

Copyright Information

This mod may not be sold or published. The modified OC files can be used in other NWN2-OC mods for the purpose of avoiding mod conflicts or loss of content.

Version History

V1.1 (2008-Feb-22): Added a separate fix, Replace_DLG that deals with the 4 dialogues improperly labled as cutscenes, and attempts to 'slow down' the flirts.

v1 (BETA)
- First public beta release.

Thank you for your kind words, folks! And I am glad that IWD2NPCs gets played :) Jaemal is a dear character to me.

Heh, I will be lying if I tol dthat I do not want to try my hand at Casavir, or Neeshka or Qara. But -and it's not just the lousy week talking - I am overextending myself between Kivan's, IWD2NPC and BR maintenance, BR-MotB and Deathstalker. I can't fulfill my existing modding commitments in a timely fashion, and it is incredibly frustrating. The worst part of it is that I can't see any way of obtaining any more time to mod, while the stories, dialogues and characters are all clamoring for my attention. It sucks.

A couple of weeks ago I posted suggesting adding more content for Casavir, including his backstory and you responded with:

"I am not sure Casavir is a good idea, to be honest, because it will require a lot of non-canon content (because we frankly know much less about Casavir, since he never had a benefit of a villan's expose the way Bishop did where we got a lot of backstory.)

And the moment you start adding non-canon content, you start going against what other people came to think about the character, so... yeah."

I totally see where you're coming from on this. :) If you ever get the desire to do it though, I think I have a solution. Make it a seperate mod from Bishop and then also make one mod where you join the two. Personally, as long as the backstory is good, I think a lot of people wouldn't mind having an "official unofficial" Casavir story. If you made it so it's a choice that works with the Bishop mod, or the bishop mod still worked alone, I think that actually would satisfy most everyone.

I think Rhia474's background for Casavir in her story on ff.net is fantastic, and have kind of adopted that in my mind as the "real" backstory of why he left Neverwinter, but would love to be able to talk to him and RP through getting to know him in game, instead.

I don't want to pile more work on you, but if you ever got the urge, this is one way to make almost everyone happy.

BTW-- my computer was out of commission for a couple weeks this month and I've been playing through IWD2. I've been using your NPCs! I didn't even realize that was YOUR mod until just now when I came to post this! It's FANTASTIC also! Jaemal is a great romance and knowing you made him has only made me want you to do a Casavir mod more. :) Sorry if I sound pushy or anything. :)

This is superb. I can't wait for a MoB extension.

Try adding this to your current save prior to trying to go to the Merchant quarter:

When I play the saved game through to the point of trying to travel to the Merchant Quarter to meet Sir Grayson, the game hangs on the area transition (with a message "Unpacking Module," but nothing following that). Since going to the Merchant quarter is required to advance the plot at this point, I'm pretty much stuck.

Great work, Melirinda! Thanks for this wonderful mod. Hope we'll see the MotB portion some day. And, of course, I'm waiting for the Deathstalker impatiently;)

Yes, the new content will appear for a saved game, from whichever place you start it. As dialogues are event related, you will just 'jump' into the sequence. There are gender checks on every dialogue however, so you will need to edit your protagonist into a female. I am not certain, but the InCharacter PlugIn might have the option to edit your saved game. Failing that, I have not really edited my protagonists myself, but I was able to run a game from someone elses' save. To reduce the save size to manageable one can always delete the Z files with the areas that will never be visited again. You can always PM me and I can lend you one of my 'start testing' saves.

I'd like to try this out, but I'm a little reluctant to re-start another run through the OC from scratch. Will the new content show up if you load a saved game from a previous run through the OC? If so, then will the dialogues show up for a male character, or are there gender checks on them? If the latter, is there any way around having to start a new run of the OC? (For example, does anyone know how to alter the gender of a character from a saved game?)

Thanks in advance for any feedback -- Andarian

Heya, you will simply need to play NWN2-OC and the new content will start showing up in the places indicated in the attached doc file. Sometimes, the dialogues get 'bumped' out of the way if you move too quickly after the event that the dialogue is scheduled after. Try giving it 10 seconds or so for testing purposes. If that's not the problem, perhaps we can troubleshoot further at G3's Bishop's Romance forum, Link ? It's just easier to maintain a thread there for a particular user and figure out each individual problem. Cheers, and please, folk, don't let the mods to make you feel down :) It all works out.

I am very glad that flirts work better now.

I feel kind of silly actually and a little inferior. I un-rar'ed the files into the folders listed above, yet I still can't see the game available when I play NWN2. Am I doing something wrong? I'm using the Program files Override directory, not the My Documents Override directory.

Posted by LemonChan at 2008-02-24 05:17:30
All seems to be working fine now, getting nwn 1 dialogs and the flirts are alot less jumpy :)

Posted by LemonChan at 2008-02-22 05:34:25
Glad I could help, in my confused and whiney way ^^
Just installing the fix now, will tell ya if it works

Posted by Melirinda at 2008-02-22 03:49:41
The error is COMPLETELY mine. I am so glad that I finally understood what everyone was saying all along - that it was not just Daeghun and Bevil. So,I uploaded the quick fix for all of you. It also adds pauses in the flirts, so I hope that makes flirting less 'flashy'. Please, let me know if the pauses helped.

To use this fix, please unrar the files from the Replace_DLG rar directly into your: Program Files\Atari\Neverwinter Nights 2\Override\BishopRomance\dlg folder, over-writing the 7 old files.

okay

I tried moving all the folders out of bishop romance folder and into override on their own, but that made him not talk to be pre-joining so I put them back :x
I wanna play this now out of sheer spite for this whole thing >:(
not true- if your bg stuff is anything to go on this should be fantastic x

Posted by Melirinda at 2008-02-21 08:58:28
Uhm, that's me who needs to check the flags :)

If you could pull the dialogue to the Toolset it will be under dialogue properties (NWN1 style dialogue will be set to TRUE).

Ok, fresh install. How do I check for a nwn1 style flag?

Maybe my computor hates Bishop.

Posted by Melirinda at 2008-02-21 06:12:28
I am truly puzzled, and do not know what to recommend appart from a fresh install. I will however mark it on my to do list to check that the dialogues have the flag for NWN1 style. Please, let me know if ALL of your conversations are Cutscenes, ie even the OC ones that used to be NWN1 style. Also, if you start seeing the NWN1 style dialogues with Bishop, I'd like to know as well.

I dont seem to get any nwn1 style dialogs. The real CS are ok cos I just got the Vigil one and that all went fine.
I put all the files into override, and the only other stuff i have in there is PC mods that I downloaded after I'd played through the first time with the Bish mod and it was still broke, so its not other stuff in my override folder methinks.
My computor hates me anyway :(

Posted by Melirinda at 2008-02-20 06:06:25
Hmm, this one should not be a cutscene, it is an NWN1 style dialogue. I am not sure why your install will be different from everyone elses. Does anyone else experience this problem, with NWN1 dialogues being turned into CS's?

hmm well it seems to be happening with ALL the cs :( I just had the knife one after ember and that one flew past me aswell.
Did I break him? :(

Posted by Melirinda at 2008-02-19 15:20:03
Heya, there are two cutscenes that I don't have a voice work for, and they will 'fly' past you - Daeghun and Bevil. Same with flirts. I will rectify it in the next version either by getting the voicework at last or by delaying the linies for a few sec each.

Have fun playing.

Loved bishop all th way through, and now a ghost from my BG mod past makes a fantastic romance ^^

buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I think somethings wrong- happened in two games so far, sometimes the cutscenes just stop without voicing the lines or having time to read them. Im worried that it might have cut some dialog aswell. Sme thing with flirts.
Any ideas?

Thank you, guys. Well, that's why there are multiple endings, everyone plays differently. Actually, there is one ending that did not make it for a really good gal, because it kept breaking the final scene. Oh, well :)

whew, what a final speech!

i always liked the touch of an "armour fou" the original bishop "romance" had (at least i saw it that way) and i always thought "if they had fleshed out that relationship a bit more, what a great and unique romance would that have been!" your mod does just that. i loved it!
SPOILER

altough i have to admit that i likesd your ending in which bishop betrays the pc a lot more, it was just more fitting ;)

Thank you a lot!

I took an evening off from the toolset just in order to have a go at the OC with your added-in Bishop romancing. Just for the occasion, I resued my evil Drow, even upped her via an old save, still your mod kickstarted as if nothing was the matter.

Despite Bishop not being my favourite companion, I have always found that his sad story at the end, as it were, merited a better follow-thru in the game. With this highly enjoyable, and well-VOed mod, this aspect of his character got much better balanced, and I got a great romance into the bargain.

Simply marvellous stuff Melirinda! :)

No, there in no effect on Influence at all, neither with Bishop, nor with anyone else. Because the game only rewards you when you agree with Bishop, not argue with him, me starting to increase your influence in the opposite cases would go against the game's original intent. And I want a more complex romance than the 'we always agree on everything' one.

Whenever I modify a dialogue, I over-write the original one. However, all I do is insert the comments, not change the conditions. Which is the most likely cause of Bevil's dialogue being bugged. So, I am thinking that it probably functions as it always did, you just get extra lines with Bishop. Or, perhaps, I made a better tie-in back into Bevil's dialogue after Bishop's remarks than the original dialogue had, unknowingly. In any case, if it's a French benefit, it's a French benefit, I wouldn't worry about it.

I don't think I will be editing the voice-work; I neither have a professional editor, nor I am overly good with Audacity. Plus it involves converting all the files back to mp3 from the format they use in the game, and I just don't have the time. I am considering quitting modding as is because between full-time job and my 16-month old I get very limited time to actually mod (I can write or access Internet from work or use Palm while commuting etc, but to do coding and voice etc I need to be on my home machine, and that does not happen very often.)

Found another one- actually, this might be a bug, or it might be a bug-FIX, oddly.

There's a known occasional issue with Bevil showing up at the keep, then refusing to say more than, "It's good to see you again, Captain." I had that issue, scoured the web about it, discovered it was a known bug, without an acceptable fix, coded, patched, or otherwise, except to reload and cross your fingers. Tried that. Repeatedly, with no luck, and had given up on ever psychoanalyzing my poor, traumatized fellow harborman.

Then I approached him with Bishop in tow, bishop gave his smirking, jaded snark, and low and behold, Bevil spilled his guts! Of course, he didn't do so for me until after I'd reached 100%, so that was really only gratifying, and not useful, but I backed up to about 50% time left, and tried it again, and Voila! Again- worked like a charm.

I wanted to ask you about influence effects- aside from a spot or two you mentioned which might "turn off" the romance option, do any of these new interactions directly effect influence, with either Bishop himself, or anyone else?

(And many thanks fot the Daegan interaction, btw- Like Casavir, after my first interaction with him at the keep, I mostly ignore him, because he has nothing new to say. Your expanded dialogue came as a delightful surprise, as did the extra stuff with Veedle.)

I'm growing accustomed to the voiceovers, though when they actually swap back and forth mid-conversation, it's still pretty harsh. My suggestion would be to continue to use them in future work, but only include them where the dialog is isolated. (Like Bishop's flirts, for example.)

One technical thought- regarding the sharp, microphone-poppiness. I've had to record with a bottom-of-the-line mic for ages myself. If you can run the vocals through a compressor, maybe add the barest trace of reverb, and just bring down the treble end via equalizer, you'll get a warmer, smoother sound. (But I know- that's an awful lot of work!)
