NEW RELEASE: Wolf Parade "Shine A Light"

Sleep four-headed freak, sleepWolf Parade "Shine A Light" Sub Pop
Matt Muroz, director
Description: Wolf Parade collaborator Matt Muroz — he's done all of the band's artwork to date — gets a little, well, wacky with the video for "Shine A Light." The clip concerns the scorn faced by a man who has four heads stacked vertically, like a totem pole, atop his shoulders. He's barred from convenience stores, is a source of ridicule at work and even gets mugged. In an added twist, the heads sometimes fly off on their own to have adventures while he sleeps. They also multiply and buzz around the poor man's head when he laughs at a box of pumpkins that strikes him as another sort of multi-headed freak. The effect used to replicate the heads is wonderfully lo-fi and fake looking, which only amplifies the bizarre humor and absurdity of everything.

NEW RELEASE: VHS Or Beta "You Got Me"

VHS or BetaVHS Or Beta "You Got Me" Astralwerks
Ryan Rickett, director
Justin Croncite, producer
Refused TV, production co
Description: The storyline of "You Got Me" concerns an unknown man enrolled in some sort of video dating service. Dissatisfied with every date, he decides to cut out his favorite features from each headshot and send them off to the company. In return, he gets a box filled with mannequin parts and various wigs from which he can create the girl of his dreams. The POV style from the conceptual footage extends to the performance, where director Ryan Rickett does an excellent job of making it seem like we're looking out the eyes of each band member. Oh, and in keeping with the  vibe of this new wave tune, there's also some footage of masked men in a romance factory that wouldn't be out of place in a typical video from the 80's. You can watch "You Got Me" courtesy of vhsorbeta.com in either Real or Windows Media.
Bonus info: One of the dates is Annie Hardy of Giant Drag and the delivery man is played by Ima Robot  frontman Alex Ebert (who is also a Refused TV director).

NEW RELEASE: The Vacancies "Save Yourself"

VacanciesThe Vacancies "Save Yourself" Blackheart
Greg Olliver, director
Ultrameena Films, production co
Description: It's no surprise to learn that The Vacancies were signed to Blackheart Records by owner Joan Jett herself, given that this Cleveland, OH punk band offers the same F-U attitude that marked most of  Jett's best known recordings. This video casts The Vacancies as a group of outlaws who pull into and perform at a warehouse where a pair of women spray paint their van so they can more easily elude the authorities.

Description: Animator/illustrator Joel Trussell deserves his own "awesomest" award for this ludicrously fun and creative video for DJ Jason Forrest. "War Photographer" spotlights a battle between two boatloads of Vikings who use music as a weapon. Although it would seem that the Vikings who favor heavy metal axes and accoutrements would reign supreme, it's actually the marching band faction that proves to be the deciding factor in this battle for ultimate awesomeness. Go watch "War Photographer," now.
