LAFAYETTE, Tenn. (AP) - President Bush has declared that a major disaster exists in Tennessee and ordered federal aid to the area struck by a string of deadly tornadoes.

The action makes federal funding available to affected individuals in the counties of Hardin, Macon, Madison, Shelby, and Sumner. Other counties may be added later.

Assistance can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs, low-cost loans to cover uninsured property losses, and other programs to help individuals and business owners recover.

Federal funding also is available to state and eligible local governments and certain private nonprofit groups.

Bush will visit Macon County on Friday to survey damage, meet with local officials and express support for people affected by the tornadoes.
