Emerging Leaders Fellowship Applications Now Available

Applications are now available for the Media Management Center’s Emerging Leaders Fellowship program for executives from independent media in the Middle East and North African region.

The program is October 8 through November 18, 2008. The first three weeks of the program are spent studying media management at Northwestern. That is followed by a two-week media residency at a United States media outlet. The fellowship is a partnership between the International Research and Exchange Board (IREX), Middle East and North African (MENA) Media, and the Media Management Center. The fellowship covers all of the executive’s expenses.

This is the third year of the program. Application deadline is April 25.

CollingerTom Collinger: Listening to the Customer

(Tracey Robinson-English) Today, all companies – large or small, media, service, or packaged-goods manufacturers - need to know their customers. Really know them.

That's why they turn to top-notch integrated marketing professionals to distill insights about customer behavior from mountains of consumer information, believes Medill's Tom Collinger.

By distilling these insights into actionable marketing and communications strategies, companies can better engage and entertain customers, said Collinger, a frequent lecturer in MMC's programs who is Associate Dean and Chair of the Integrated Marketing Communication’s Program (IMC) at Northwestern's Medill School. A former Leo Burnett advertising executive, he is a widely recognized expert on integrated marketing communications, e-commerce, database and customer relationship management.

Collinger said marketers are in the midst of an unnerving revolution, on the verge of the first consumer-led recession in decades.

"This shift is not just here at Medill's IMC program," Collinger said. "It's a shift that has to do with how companies go about managing their brands - starting with analyzing consumer and stakeholder behaviors to better segment them, which ultimately allows for greater relevance." »more



RogersSteven Rogers: Media Must Embrace Intrapreneurship and Entrepreneurship

(Tracey Robinson-English) Media executives struggling to manage their careers and reinvent themselves for today's changing media climate need to present big ideas in the workplace, put them to work and adopt entrepreneurial traits as part of their personal strategy to succeed.

That's the counsel that Kellogg School of Management Professor Steve Rogers regularly gives media executives in Media Management Center programs. Rogers, director of the Larry and Carol Levy Institute for Entrepreneurial Practice at Kellogg, is a successful entrepreneur himself and was named one of BusinessWeek's 14 "New Stars of Finance."

Rogers urges media executives to embrace innovation and take risks - like hiring younger and younger faces - even high school or college students - to create future products and think completely outside of the business. »more

State of the media report

The 2008 State of the Media report is out and, as always, full of interesting information. In particular, it concludes that people - including young people - gravitate to established old-media brands, they just use it online. "The crisis in journalism... may not strictly be loss of audience. It may, more fundamentally, be the decoupling of news and advertising."

More focus on the audience is needed

A new study by the Readership Institute finds that newspaper executives are ever so slightly more audience-oriented than they were in previous studies, but they are short of the ideal level they themselves describe. Those who rate their organization as being more audience-oriented, also tend to view the nature of their business in non-traditional ways – for example, as a business that connects audiences to one another, or aggregates content.

Users vs. experts?

Newsweek has an article saying that user-generated content is on the way out, citing venture capitalists who fund online efforts and relying on Andrew Keen's argument about the cult of the amateur. This has been met with quite a furor by some (see here and here and here).

Internet scores higher on trust than the press

According to a new Harris Interactive poll, more people say they trust Internet news and information sites than they trust the press. This low trust curiously coincides with an increased interest in political news this election year.

Advice to young filmakers
about a business in flux


Young filmmakers can benefit from newly-lowered barriers to entry and from a "wealth of talent" available to them in Hollywood, movie producer Cary Woods tolds students at the Kellogg School of Management, in a session moderated by MMC Executive Director Michael P. Smith. Woods, producer of such hits as "Scream" and "Swingers," talked about movie critics, the independent film business and more during his session, according to a story on the Kellogg web site.
