The Environment Capital
Peterborough has set itself an ambitious target to become the acknowledged Environment Capital of the UK.
We already have much to build on. Peterborough is one of only four environment cities and one of only three sustainable transport demonstration towns. We boast the largest cluster of environmental businesses in the country and contributed the most pledges to the Environment Agency World Environment Day outside of London.
In support of our aspirations the Greater Peterborough Partnership recently launched it's Environment Capital Manifesto, setting out a new range of targets that we will deliver in the coming years to cement our reputation as the UK's Environment Capital. These include:
- Highest recycling and recovery rates and lowest waste to landfill per household in the UK by 2012 and maintained thereafter
- Peterborough to have the highest proportion of UK priority habitats in favourable condition compared to any other Local Unitary
Authority, by 2015.
- All public buildings to have 30% reduction in energy use by 2012 and 20% renewable energy sources by 2014
The work required to achieve these targets will be taken forward by a range of local partners and governed by the Environment Capital Partnership, for further details of its work click here.
