Boris celebrates Vaisakhi in Southall
Following his visit to the Sri Sabha Singh Guru Temple in Ealing Southall to celebrate the Sikh New Year festival of Vaisakhi, Boris said:
"I want to thank the Sikh community of Southall, who gave me such a warm and welcoming reception when I celebrated Vaisakhi with them on Sunday at the Sri Sabha Singh Guru Temple. My wife Marina - who accompanied me - is half Sikh, so this was not my first experience of Vaisakhi... but it was certainly the most exciting. I was hugely impressed by the parade of brightly-coloured floats and overwhelmed by the generosity of those who lined the streets to line our stomachs with delicious food and drink. I particularly enjoyed the sweet tea!
"I was also honoured to meet the President of the Temple, Hemmat Sohi, and his Committee. They were most hospitable on my tour around the Temple, during which I learned that the Sri Sabha Singh Guru Temple is the largest of its kind outside India, and was built completely from community support. This testament to the drive and determination of London's Sikhs is a perfect illustration of how London's communities can contribute to the character of our capital.
"London is a fantastically diverse city and, if elected as Mayor on 1st May, I will do all I can to promote understanding, integration and harmony amongst all our communities. A big part of this will be celebrating Londoners' culture and heritage with events like the one on Sunday. On that note, I hope you have a fantastic festival with your family, friends, loved ones, neighbours and colleagues, and look forward to celebrating again with you next year."
