Wed 12.31 | A New Year Coming, with new chances, and new opportunities for re-thinking | Introducing ThinkPop: like Twitter, with a soul Watch your thoughts; they become words. | Watch your words; they become actions. | Watch your actions; they become habits. | Watch your habits; they become character. | Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. | - Leo Tolstoy | Imagine a world where everyone employed Tolstoy's advice. A world where all of us felt free to share our thoughts openly, knowing that our beliefs truly mattered. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be a part of such a conscious community? |
Tue 12.30 | Oceana | Going on a cruise this holiday season? CRUISE SHIP POLLUTION: A GROWING PROBLEM FOR OUR OCEANS Cruise ships generate an astonishing amount of pollution, up to 25,000 gallons of sewage from toilets and 143,000 gallons of sewage from sinks, galleys and showers each day. Currently, lax state and federal laws allow cruise ships to dump untreated sewage from toilets once the ships is three mile from shore. Within three miles, cruise ships can dump sewage from toilets that has been treated, by marine sanitation devices which have been shown to be inadequate. In addition, sewage from sinks and showers can be dumped without treatment. Our coastal environment is at risk from the threats of bacteria, pathogens and heavy metals generated in these waste streams. MORE>> |
Mon 12.29 | A New Year | OnEarth: 350: A Global Cause Calls For Local Action It is easy to question the real effectiveness or value of protest. A bunch of people holding signs in the cold, shouting awkward rhymes and marching seems to do little but re-enforce the stereotype of whiny liberals. Besides, the people in the passing cars are not in any position to accommodate your demands. So why bother? Why is community organizing and public protest such a crucial part of something as big as the fight on global warming? Wouldn't it be better if we all stayed home, wrote e-mails to our representatives, and saved the gas? No. |

We support projects that plant the right trees in the right places for the right reasons. Our members and supporters are anxious to help us make a difference on the land by funding projects, such as yours. |

Sun 9.28 | NASA Earth Observatory | The idea seemed simple enough: the more carbon dioxide that people pumped into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, the more the oceans would absorb. The ocean would continue to soak up more and more carbon dioxide until global warming heated the ocean enough to slow down ocean circulation. Water trapped at the surface would become saturated, at which point, the ocean would slow its carbon uptake. To oceanographers of 30 years ago, the question was less, how will human emissions change the ocean carbon cycle, and more, is the ocean carbon cycle changing yet? |

The vast expanses of glaciers - massed, on average, 1.6 miles deep - contain enough water to raise sea levels worldwide by 23 feet. Should they melt or otherwise slip into the ocean, they would flood coastal capitals, submerge tropical islands and generally redraw the world's atlases. The infusion of fresh water could slow or shut down the ocean's currents, plunging Europe into bitter winter. Read the Article >>> |

Sun 8.31 | Hurricane Katrina: 3 Years Later | NRDC: Environmental Justice: The Challenge: Hurricane Katrina did more than destroy human life and property in the New Orleans region -- it created an environmental disaster of unprecedented scope, swamping aging water and sewage systems, sweeping more than 8 million gallons of oil and toxic chemicals out of industrial and abandoned toxic waste sites into residential areas, spurring dangerously high levels of mold growth, and generating enough trash to cover 1,000 football fields with a 6-story-high pile of garbage. In addition, Katrina exposed a harsh truth about social and racial inequity in the New Orleans area. |

What does this week's Science Times section have in common with "The Happening," the new thriller from M. Night Shyamalan? I explored this notion for a half hour on the phone with the writer/director a few days ago, talking about science, nature, scary movies, the Gaia hypothesis, bee die-offs and more. The Year's ultimate goal of helping to build safer, healthier and wealthier societies around the globe is expressed in the Year's subtitle ‘Earth science for Society'. The International Year runs from January 2007 to December 2009, the central year of the triennium (2008), having been proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the UN Year.
