Introducing ThinkPop: like Twitter, with a soul

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

- Leo Tolstoy

Imagine a world where everyone employed Tolstoy's advice. A world where all of us felt free to share our thoughts openly, knowing that our beliefs truly mattered. Wouldn't it be wonderful to be a part of such a conscious community?

CRUISE SHIP POLLUTION: A GROWING PROBLEM FOR OUR OCEANS
Cruise ships generate an astonishing amount of pollution, up to 25,000 gallons of sewage from toilets and 143,000 gallons of sewage from sinks, galleys and showers each day. Currently, lax state and federal laws allow cruise ships to dump untreated sewage from toilets once the ships is three mile from shore. Within three miles, cruise ships can dump sewage from toilets that has been treated, by marine sanitation devices which have been shown to be inadequate. In addition, sewage from sinks and showers can be dumped without treatment.

Our coastal environment is at risk from the threats of bacteria, pathogens and heavy metals generated in these waste streams. MORE>>

OnEarth: 350: A Global Cause Calls For Local Action

It is easy to question the real effectiveness or value of protest. A bunch of people holding signs in the cold, shouting awkward rhymes and marching seems to do little but re-enforce the stereotype of whiny liberals. Besides, the people in the passing cars are not in any position to accommodate your demands. So why bother? Why is community organizing and public protest such a crucial part of something as big as the fight on global warming? Wouldn't it be better if we all stayed home, wrote e-mails to our representatives, and saved the gas?

No.

A New Year

American Forests: American Forests is always looking for quality tree-planting projects to be funded by our Global ReLeaf Forests ecosystem restoration program. We are particularly interested in partnering with private and public sector organizations and agencies to plant trees and improve the environment in projects that would otherwise not be feasible. We support projects that plant the right trees in the right places for the right reasons. Our members and supporters are anxious to help us make a difference on the land by funding projects, such as yours.

The idea seemed simple enough: the more carbon dioxide that people pumped into the atmosphere by burning fossil fuels, the more the oceans would absorb. The ocean would continue to soak up more and more carbon dioxide until global warming heated the ocean enough to slow down ocean circulation. Water trapped at the surface would become saturated, at which point, the ocean would slow its carbon uptake. To oceanographers of 30 years ago, the question was less, how will human emissions change the ocean carbon cycle, and more, is the ocean carbon cycle changing yet?

Greenland's ice sheet represents one of global warming's most disturbing threats. The vast expanses of glaciers - massed, on average, 1.6 miles deep - contain enough water to raise sea levels worldwide by 23 feet. Should they melt or otherwise slip into the ocean, they would flood coastal capitals, submerge tropical islands and generally redraw the world's atlases. The infusion of fresh water could slow or shut down the ocean's currents, plunging Europe into bitter winter. Read the Article >>>

"Ladies and gentlemen:

There are times in the history of our nation when our very way of life depends upon dispelling illusions and awakening to the challenge of a present danger. In such moments, we are called upon to move quickly and boldly to shake off complacency, throw aside old habits and rise, clear-eyed and alert, to the necessity of big changes. Those who, for whatever reason, refuse to do their part must either be persuaded to join the effort or asked to step aside. This is such a moment. M. Night Shyamalan's New Villain

What does this week's Science Times section have in common with "The Happening," the new thriller from M. Night Shyamalan? The common element is the ability of non-human nature to unnerve us when it acts out of character. I explored this notion for a half hour on the phone with the writer/director a few days ago, talking about science, nature, scary movies, the Gaia hypothesis, bee die-offs and more. Then I had an advance look at the film, which opens this weekend.

Restaurants Pass Their Eco-Bills to Customers:

Shame, shame! I just read this New York Times article about how more restaurants are banishing bottled water from their menus to be more eco-conscious. Sounds wonderful, right? Well, this is why I'm a little upset: Some of the same restaurants replace the pricey bottled water with filtered tap water from their newly installed filtration systems and CHARGE customers for the "special" water. A water tax passed onto your guests! That's right. The restaurants are paying themselves back at our expense for being good to the environment. That, my friends, is awful. You should help the earth because you want to, not because you've devised a way to profit off it.

Instead of being able to "lift mine eyes unto the hills - from whence cometh my strength" - too often, we lift our eyes unto hills where ridges are bare from logging or covered with dying trees or mottled with houses. These forested hills that for ye, ars represented eternity and solitude, sometimes look like they s, uffer from mange.

In response to this alarming destruction, NRDC named the Cumberland Plateau region a BioGem in 2005. Since then, hundreds of thousands of BioGems Defenders from ar, ound the country have taken online action in defense of this vast network of forestlands stretching from Kentucky and Tennessee down through the Carolinas to Georgia and Alabama. And their efforts have paid off: Following intense pressure from BioGems Defenders, the giant paper company Bowater signed a groundbreaking agreement to stop clearcutting natural hardwood forests and converting them to pine plantations.

Up, Up, and Away: A new transit system would convert old airplanes into speedy, eco-friendly trains

Imagine a national transit system that runs on solar energy and wind power. Now imagine that it consists of recycled airplanes speeding along elevated tracks. It might sound like a vintage Disneyland ride updated for modern ecophiles, but an American company is working to make this vision a reality.

To Slow Amazon Fires, Scientists Light Their Own
A few months ago, a team of scientists wal, , ked into a stretch of Amaz, on forest and purposely burned it. The scientists want to understand how burning forests contribute to climate change - and they want to know how to slow or stop those fires.
But fire is everywhere in the Amazon. It's the way people clear land for agriculture and livestock.

Re-Think!

2008 is the I, nternational Year of Planet Earth:

What is the International Year of Planet Earth?
The International Year of Planet Earth aims to ensure greater and more effective use by society of the knowledge accumulated by the world's 400,000 Earth scientists. The Year's ultimate goal of helping to build safer, healthier and wealthier societies around the globe is expressed in the Year's subtitle ‘Earth science for Society'.
The International Year runs from January 2007 to December 2009, the central year of the triennium (2008), having been proclaimed by the UN General Assembly as the UN Year. The UN sees the Year as a contribution to their sustainable development targets as it promotes wise (sustainable) use of Earth materials and encourages better planning and management to reduce risks for the world's inhabitants.
