|  Presidents's Message

The Academy of Korean Studies was founded by the Korean Government on 30th June 1978 with the purpose of establishing in-depth research on the essence of Korean culture. To achieve this aim, The Academy has devoted itself to identifying and interpreting traditional Korean culture, defining the academic identity of Korean Studies, and cultivating able scholars with global perspectives and values that will be indispensible in the 21st century.

Looking back to when the Academy of Korean Studies was founded, Korean society in general had little knowledge of its own culture and history; thus the critical need to restore the greater Korean cultural identity was recognised, which had hitherto been overlooked as a result of rapid industrialization. In order to meet these needs, the Academy has endeavored over the past 23 years to establish the true identity of Korean Studies, educate specialists, build information networks on Korean Studies, digitalize information on Korean culture, integrate and distribute Korean Studies resources, and support the ongoing research in Korean Studies overseas.

Cultural heritage is as essential as political or economic power for maintaining national vitality. Accordingly, while promoting cooperation through cultural exchange, every nation strives to strengthen its cultural identity and cultural independence. Understanding and maintaining one's cultural identity and ensuring its transmission to future generations is a prerequisite for understanding international culture; it can also be a fundamental factor in national competitiveness. In this sense, our committment to Korean culture as of yesterday, today, and tomorrow will help lay the groundwork for an ever modernizing Korea.

We will continue to work hard to maintain the Academy as the international academic hub for Korean Studies by conducting comprehensive research on Korean culture, providing education for young leaders in Korean Studies, and enhancing the digitalization of Korean Studies materials. We place our trust in your encouragement and cooperation in order to accomplish these missions together.
