Canada's annual seal massacre is very political in nature and it's the men and women in office that make the laws and policies that we need to change!

  • He has called for an increase in the seal kill quota.
  • He was quoted in the Canadian media as saying that he has personally witnessed the exponential growth in seal populations off Sable Island as an offshore driller in the 1980s, and he therefore advocates killing more seals.

Harpseals.org comment: "Responding to the Canadian Department of Fisheries idea to conduct mass sterilization of the harp seals, Keddy said, ""I want to know whether the minister of fisheries is going to hold them, or use the knife," said Keddy. "I was a farmer before this job and I've castrated lots of animals... and a 400 or 500 pound seal with a mouthful of teeth like a Doberman pinscher, I don't think I want to have anything to do with that." (In his official biography he describes himself as being a nurseryman prior to being elected. He may be confusing pigs with pears.)

      The Conservative MP argued instead for an increase in quotas for the seal slaughter and said it would bring two benefits - a reduction in seal predation on cod and economic spin-offs from the sale of seal products such as pelts, meat and even the seal penis, prized by some in Asia as an aphrodisiac. Here's a man who is supporting the idea of peddling snake oil erection medicine to the Far East. You can call him the Lorena Bobbitt of Nova Scotia. What the world really needs right now is a surplus of seal penises!

      The proof that Mr. Kerry does not have any idea of what he is talking about with regard to the seals can be found in his statement about seeing seal populations expanding rapidly at Sable Island. Sable Island lies in the Atlantic off the coast of Nova Scotia. It is NOT a habitat for harp seals at anytime during the year. Mr. Kerry could not have seen a single harp seal at Sable island at anytime. He could have seen Grey seals and these seals are not that numerous. But to a seal-hating fisherman, one seal is considered too many and Mr. Keddy has lots of fishermen in his constituency. So what we have here is a Member of Parliament who before the 2006 election, was an official critic of Department of Fisheries policies who can't tell a harp seal from a grey seal. These two species are, by the way, very easy to distinguish. Mr. Keddy should at least acquaint himself with the basic simple facts about seal biology before he fires press quips from the hip on something he is completely ignorant about."

Good news!
A once prominent Uber cyber target, John Efford (pictured at the top of this page) is no longer involved in seal politics!

The former Newfoundland Fisheries Minister who then became Minister of Natural Resources is now just a bad memory. This man used his political clout to do more damage to Canada's animals and environment than most can imagine.

With a now infamous and almost unbelievable moment in the history of seal-hunt politics, the lowpoint in this crass politician's career was perhaps when he gave a speech to the Newfoundland Legislature in 2002. He led the call for the extermination of the seals with the statement quoted verbatim at the top of this page. His words speak volumes about his character.
