RAYS 9, INDIANS 7 (10)
at Winter Haven, Fla.
Thursday, March 27

Rays at the plate: Akinori Iwamura got the Rays off on the right foot in the first with a leadoff homer off Cliff Lee. Carl Crawford and Carlos Pena also went deep. Crawford launched a two-run shot to left-center field off Lee in the third inning, and Pena hit a two run shot to right-center off Craig Breslow in the eighth.

Indians at the plate: With a packed house on hand for the Tribe's final game at Chain of Lakes Park, the Indians loaded the bases against Andy Sonnanstine in the fourth. Non-roster invitee Andy Gonzalez, who has had a strong camp while playing multiple positions in the infield and outfield, brought everybody home with a grand slam to the left-field corner. The Indians set a club attendance record by drawing 87,301 fans this spring, and they thanked the fans for their support. Grady Sizemore threw his jersey to a fan in the crowd when he came off the field, and Jason Michaels gave away one of his bats. Rookies Ryan Goleski and Andy Camacaro hit a double and a single in the bottom of the ninth to drive in two and extend the Indians' last Florida spring game one extra inning.

Rays on the mound: Sonnanstine, a Barberton, Ohio, native, gave up the four runs on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts in four innings of work. Right-hander Grant Balfour had some major control problems in the sixth inning, walking Jason Tyner with the bases loaded.

Indians on the mound: Lee went 5 1/3 innings, giving up four runs on six hits with six strikeouts. The homers were his only major mistakes. Lee will pitch for Class A Kinston on Tuesday as his final tune-up for the season. Jorge Julio, who won a bullpen job with the Tribe, got the last two outs in the sixth.

Grapefruit League records: Rays 18-6; Indians 14-13-3.

Up next for the Rays: The Rays will close out their home schedule for Spring Training on Friday afternoon against the Reds in a 1:05 p.m. ET contest at Progress Energy Park, in what will be the final Rays game at the historic ballpark. Matt Garza will make his final tune-up before pitching the second game of the season Wednesday against the Orioles. The Reds will counter with Francisco Cordero.

Up next for the Indians: With Winter Haven in the rearview mirror, it's off to Atlanta, where the Indians will play one final pair of exhibitions in preparation for the '08 season. Right-hander Fausto Carmona will get Friday's 7:05 p.m. ET start at Turner Field, opposite Braves right-hander Jarr Jurrjens.
