E Timor unrest an attempted coup: PM

East Timor's Prime Minister Mari Alkatiri says the deadly unrest last month and this week was a continuing attempt to stage a coup.

"For him, the situation in Timor-Leste was an attempt of a constitutional coup d'etat," a statement from the premier's office said.

The actions from April 28 "had the aim of blocking the democratic institutions, preventing them to function in a way that the only solution would be for national parliament to be dissolved by the President... which would provoke the fall of the Government," the statement said.

The main violence occurred when sacked soldiers and their supporters staged a rally which turned violent last month.

Five people were killed, more than 100 buildings were damaged and at least 21,000 people fled Dili in the aftermath.

On Monday, police said one officer was killed during a clash with about 1,000 people who had surrounded a government office in the town of Gleno south-west of Dili.
