In March 2008, two decades after Trent Reznor formed Nine Inch Nails, his project forwent the process of releasing albums in a traditional style and dropped a new one, Ghosts I-IV, in a variety of fashions including free and paid downloads and mail order deluxe packages. The approach was as unique as the album itself — a four-volume collection of 36 instrumental tracks. Reznor recorded the music in fall 2007 over 10 weeks with help from longtime associates like English producer/musicians Atticus Ross and Alan Moulder, NIN touring keyboardist Alessandro Cortini, King Crimson guitarist/vocalist Adrian Belew and Dresden Dolls drummer Brian Viglione. In the experimental spirit of artists like Einstuerzende Neubauten and Brian Eno, NIN recorded the effort without limitations and the release was received with much fanfare. Within days of hitting the net, the pricey $300 version of the project sold out and the group landed at No. 1 on Amazon’s Mp3 store for the $5 version. While it’s likely Reznor and company will trot out some of Ghost I-IV’s numbers on stage this summer, this inaugural Lollapalooza veteran will no doubt pepper his set with hits from NIN’s illustrious past, which includes lauded albums The Downward Spiral, Pretty Hate Machine, and 2007’s Year Zero.
