Melissa Thomas, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, trained at the Alabama Ballet School under the direction of Wes Chapman and Roger Van Fleteren. She received American Ballet Theatre's National Training Scholarship from 1998 through 2001. In 1999 Thomas was named ABT's National Coca-Cola Scholar. In 2001, she won the silver medal at the Youth America Grande Prix and was a semi-finalist at the Helsinki International Ballet Competition. Thomas danced as an apprentice with the Alabama Ballet for the 2000-2001 season. Thomas participated in ABT’s Summer Program in 2000 and 2001. She spent the past year dancing with ABT’s Studio Company and joined the main company as a member of the corps de ballet in August 2002.

Thomas’ repertoire with the Company includes Polyhymnia in Apollo, a Shade in La Bayadère, Moss in Cinderella, Prayer in Coppélia, a flower girl in Don Quixote, the Third Girl in Fancy Free, Moyna in Giselle, the Old Mother in The Green Table, Rosaline and a Harlot in Romeo and Juliet, the Fairy of Charity and the Queen in The Sleeping Beauty, the Spanish Princess, a big swan and the Hungarian Princess in Swan Lake, Diana in Sylvia, leading roles in Dark Elegies, The Garden of Villandry and Within You Without You: A Tribute to George Harrison and a featured role in HereAfter.
