IN FLAMES is a band that never seems to want to stand still. Since taking the stylistic turn heard on "Reroute To Remain" that caused many longtime fans to cry "sell out," the Swedes have continued to evolve and experiment with each release. While that disc, along with "Soundtrack To Your Escape", may have left a slightly bitter taste in the mouths of those who didn't jive with the band's more accessible and tuneful approach to songwriting, said albums did serve as springboards for the career-defining "Come Clarity". By merging elements of past and present, IN FLAMES reemerged as a brand new beast and proved they could still dominate. Still, the question remained as to whether IN FLAMES would be able to follow up with an album of equal or superior quality. After spending some time with their latest effort, "A Sense Of Purpose", the best answer I can give would be — almost.

While keeping one foot firmly planted in the ground that spawned "Come Clarity", IN FLAMES takes a sizable step in the direction of mainstream metal with the other. The end result is a solid, albeit contrived (at times) endeavor. "A Sense Of Purpose" kicks off with the simple, yet effective muscular riffing of "The Mirror's Truth". I found this to be a decent tune, but still wasn't entirely convinced. Despite a thin layer of lyrical cheese, the chorus on "Disconnected" is downright undeniable. It's times like this where vocalist Anders Fridén shines. Give this one three or four listens and you'll be singing right along with him. Early on, you can plainly hear that "A Sense Of Purpose" is based around a set formula, dictated by Fridén's volley between his raspy and clean voices. They do manage to play with said formula a little by adding random acoustic interludes, well-placed bridges and a handful of short, but sweet guitar solos. Guitarists Jesper Strömblad and Björn Gellote manage to push the envelope a bit with their harmonized twin-axe attack on infectious tracks like "Alias" and "I'm The Highway". By and large, this is a far less adventurous outing than the last few we've heard from IN FLAMES, save for the eight minute standout "The Chosen Pessimist". A world apart from the 11 other condensed and calculated songs on the disc, this is a dark and moody epic that can either wrap you up in the throes of its projected depression, or just bore the hell out you; depending on your mood at the time. After an abrupt ending, the aggressive attack of "Sober And Irrelevant" is just forceful enough to shock your system back into go mode. It's at this point that the album really climaxes with a trio of tunes ("Condemned", "Drenched In Fear" and "March to The Shore") that lay to waste any notions that IN FLAMES has lost their edge by delivering massive grooves, striking guitar melodies, and a sense of seething anger not felt anywhere else on the disc.

As it stands among the rest of IN FLAMES' catalogue, "A Sense Of Purpose" probably won't do much to cheer up those who are already pissed off at the band's evolution. Anyone else won't have any problem sinking their teeth into this one. Sometimes it hits, sometimes it misses, but ultimately this is a well-written affair that tends to grow on you with each listen.

Basically, any band that just screams in the microphone is death metal in my opinion. But In Flames managed to grow on me over the years. Great stuff. I can tolerate it moreso on this album, there best album since Soundtrack to your escape.

But a good step back from Come Clarity. That one had some definable substance, where this one feels like a "Running through the motions" album. I will however still say that this band is going to be even bigger one day than it already is, it will just not be because of this album.

Come on, boys... give us a growl Anders, and let us hear some of that Jester Race.

That's it I agree that the guy who hate In Flames is a juvenile homophobic and it seems that he haven't heard any other Swedish band besides In Flames and The Haunted.
But I also Agree that the stuff that IF had release since Clayman is as boring as watching Gilmore Girls on TV.

So YES, Opeth, Meshuggah, Haunted it is my friends, I don't even bother to download this album on Mp3 hahahaha.

BTW: I never think of a band being sold out.... I just think they do crap... and some other people (a lotof other people) like it.....here in Chile only 15 years old kids like In Flames... the rest old guys like me.... well you know.....

You forgot Hypocrisy^^ And Dark Tranquillity^^

But I forgive you.

Alright, this record gave me a little scare at first, after my first listen I thought it was their weakest album so far...
But I changed my mind... It doesn't get close to the musical brilliance of The Jester Race or Lunar Strain... And it doesn't combine heaviness with cathiness as good as Clayman... And in it's mainstreamness and catchy/ sing along songs it is by far not as easy listening as Soundtrack to you Escape...
But I don't know... It somehow works for me... Apart from a few songs, it is a pretty soft and a little whiny album, but I like it a lot anyway. After a few listens this record starts to get a hold on you, and before you know it it won't let go!
I mean like, Drenched in Fear!! Amazing chorus!! Condemned!! Great new live In Flames song!! The Chosen Pessimist!! Didn't know that a metal band could do a song like this one!! Alias!! Killer acoustic guitar thing going on in the middle of the song!! And I could go on and on and on!
I'd give this album a 8,5 normally, but 'cause this is BB i give it a 10 (you give a 1 or a 10 here, nothing in between...).

I read an interview w/ one of the guitarists the other day who said they don't like playing any of their older stuff because the kids who like their new stuff don't like their old stuff, and therefore don't recognize any of the old songs when they play them. Do you need any more proof that they've sold out? If you've gotten so bad that you've lost most of your fans from the beginning, that says something!! Metallica sold out hardcore, but even they're smart enough to know their older music is better, hence the reason that "era" dominates their set lists to this day.

What you talkin' 'bout Willis?

Anyway,

Reviews can never be 'right' or 'wrong' but personally I think Ryan's is a fair evaluation of this album. However, I think it's time older fans moved on and stopped throwing bile at In Flames if they're not happy and feel the band have lost that spark that made them so special.

I'm one of those people - also because I don't feel that the newer fans give the older song the appreciation they deserve at gigs. Therefore the band have stopped playing a lot of those songs live which is a great shame. I'm moving on but I'll keep those nineties albums that are overflowing with talent and still enjoy them.

I only gave it a 6 because like it or not you have to compare it to their older stuff, with me rating Jester Race a 10..

but that being said, amongst the music today, its a solid, consistent album, sure its catchy and might rope in some old fans of linkin park who actually think guitar solos are cool, but after a few listens its infectious :)

In Flames is just playing to their record label to sell cd's they're catering to a much younger crowd that is listening to bands like Trivium i'll only be happy if this opens the door for bands such as Darkane and The Defaced but then again those bands may travel the same path as In Flames and me personally i'll pass on that

This is great progression. If you want In Flames to sound like they used to, instead of bitching about it, go listen to the myriad of copycat clones, or those bands who have progressed nicely in different directions. There are hundreds of albums to provide you with so many hours of enjoyment that you won't even have time to bitch and moan on Blabbermouth.

I dig In Flames' progression, and the new album is catchy as fuck.

I wonder if both Gelotte and Stromblad are pushing towards simpler songs, or if it is just Gelotte (or just Stromblad?).

Stromblad certainly has another outlet though, check out Dimension Zero's new CD (face-melting).

I don't mind Friden's singing; screaming/growing & regular singing can be a great combination.

Anyway, while this CD certainly doesn't live up to Clayman (possibly my favorite In Flames CD: 9/10), it is still listenable.
After the first few listens, it seems to agree with me more than Come Clarity in the aggregate. At least it's not the same old crap like Children of Bodom's new effort.

I have always been a huge In Flames fan. Of course I like their old stuff the best, but I actually like Soundtrack to Your Escape and Reroute to Remain okay and I really love Come Clarity. In other words, I'm not a hater who says only their old shit is good. I love all eras of In Flames.

Until now.

I bought A Sense of Purpose the day of its American release and was utterly shocked at the direction the band has taken. Until now, In Flames has always been agressive and assertive sounding, even on their recent "softer" albums. But both the vocal melodies and the lyrics on the new album are, well, fucking whiney. Aside from a few good solos, the guitar parts are pretty weak, as well. I've been listening to the album all week trying to get into it, but I can't. A couple of tracks towards the end are okay, but they released a fucking emo album. It sounds like something little kids would listen to. I truly cannot picture anyone over 18 listening to this album and enjoying it. How is it possible that as the band has aged, their sound has suddenly become so incredibly immature?

I still love In Flames for their previous albums and I'm sure their live shows will continue to be as awesome as ever, but they just released their St. Anger.

You said - "We dont want catchy songs, we want metal!!! "

Uhh, last time I check, the early material features some of the most insanely catchy leads and riffs of any metal band. Actually, I would argue that SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR ESCAPE, a newer release, is the least catchy album from these guys (consequently my least favorite). Yeah, I get all the anger from older fans... I distinctly remember buying REROUTE TO REMAIN as a new release and was annoyed at the shift in style, but I was able to find things to like about that album, and while the subsequent two are hit or miss, I'm really pleased with this new album... I think it fits nicely between the solid hard rock of CLAYMAN and some of the experimentation of REROUTE TO REMAIN. I think that if it had actually been released in between the two records, perhaps the band's progression wouldn't have seemed so abrupt.

You know if I were to rank all the In Flames albums, the early releases would obviously top out my list, but that doesn't mean I don't dig on some of the later stuff. Modern influences, sure, but calling it "emo" is a bit of a stretch though. I think it has more to do with the band's admitted love of synth-pop. See their cover of Depeche Mode all the way back to the Whoracle days... then compare to that synth lead in "The Quiet Place" for instance... yeah, I didn't see the change coming, but hindsight is 20/20.

The riffs are simple and contrived enough, but what makes it even worse is Anders' vocals. Honestly, if you find his vocals appealing on this record, perhaps you should check out your local Hot Topic and pick up the latest My Chemical Romance album, too.

Lunar Strain through Clayman = Brilliant.

Well, when i first heard it ,it sounded a lesser album from come clarity(which is less good than soundtrack even though heavier).Give it some time.I think now it's a quite solid album with some (to be) classic hits like disconnected, condemned, move through me,march to the shore. It's not their best by far.It delivers what In Flames want.Catchy sing along hits made for videoclips and summer festivals. And really,i cant get it.Why the hell all you who have stopped liking in flames bother? It's meaningless to hear an opinion from someone who has stopped liking In Flames since 2000.i mean there are thousand bands out there sounding like whoracle and colony.Grow up kids.U want something heavy?

I got into In Flames when Whoracle came out and they have always have been one of my favorite bands. I liked the direction they went in with Reroute To Remain but HATED Soundtrack to your Escape. I thought Come Clarity ruled. But I think Soundtrack to your Escape, their WORST album, is a MILLION times better than A Sense of Purpose. God, after listening to three songs off it I just go back and listen to The Jester Race or Clayman instead. What happened to In Flames? I've refused to believe that they've sold out for years now, but now I think they have. And what's with the crappy as hell Korn album cover? I thought the Come Clarity cover was bad, but this is just a slap in the face. Fuck you, In Flames, bad show.

After all the talk on here about 'emo' and 'Korn' comparisons, I was sure I wouldn't like this. But this is definitely not emo and I don't hear anything like nu-metal. This is definitely In Flames, who have their own distinctive sound, taking a more mainstream approach while still maintaining a high level of fierce energy throughout. My only criticism would be that some of the choruses are pretty generic and forgettable, but otherwise a powerful listen. I would take this over Paramore any day.

How can anyone in their right mind give this album a 10???? I know it may be of opinion, but this is NOT a 10 star In Flames album...not even remotely close. A 10 star In Flames album "could" be either "The Jester Race", "Whoracle", "Colony", or "Clayman" with honorable mentions to the material released before The Jester Race.

Found it very mediocre. In Flames remain as musically capable now as they did back in their earlier days, but none of the songs on the new one really stood out. What once had been a powerful creative force is now really, really, really, really, really fucking bland. Or average. At best I would describe it as a sandwich with nice butter but nothing on it, in the worst analysis ever...
Then again, I wasn't that impressed with Reroute or Come Clarity either, but more impressed than I was with this.

It's nothing groundbreaking or different from the last few albums, but it certainly isn't a bad album.

I'd give Clayman a 10 (that's just my personally fave)

I'd give this and Come Clarity an 8.

The new Children of Bodom album?
A solid 9 at least.

I have enjoyed every IF release up till now. I even convinced myself to like Come Clarity. Admittingly, Soundtrack was too far off base for IF for me to get into, but the new album makes Soundtrack sound brutal as hell. Haha, kinda like how St Anger made Load sound decent. Just when you think a band has "sold out" and changed up their sound too much - then they go and record a turd like this to proove it.

Every band deserves some lattitude to "evolve" their sound. Not everyone can be AC/DC or Pro-Pain and have every album sound the same. My beef is that In Flames abandoned the twin guitar harmonies and guitar solos that was the essence of their sound. But, that should be everybody's problem with IF as well. I'm not the biggest Arch Enemy fan, but I have to take this opportunity to applaud them. They abandoned the nu direction they explored on the last album with a full-on thrash attack on Rise Of The Tyrant. The exact opposite of In Flames.

As Swedish thrash continues to weaken, I'm thankful for the bay-area resurgance. Hails to TESTAMENT, EXODUS, and DEATH ANGEL!!!!!!!!!!

The day I heard this album is the day I realized that, yes a Swedish metal band capable of good music is physically able to make an album worse than Soundtrack To Your Escape. This is maybe worth 2 listens if you really want to be generous. I have NEVER been someone who goes around giving albums 1 ratings because it didn't meet my expectations, in fact people that do this piss me right off, but this album deserves it. I'll add to the resounding echo of admiration for Clayman and PLEASE PLEASE don't waste your money on this. That said, In Flames is also starting to get a little boring live too. These are dark times for Gothenburg.

Once again, In Flames have proven that they can cross into uncharted territory and come out victorious. Their new album shows how much the band has evolved from their previous records. Though I do admit that their latest release is less heavy and more melodic, they still managed to create a decent and listenable record (especially for the fans of the previous three albums).

I would gladly give this album a 7/10.

P.S. Oh and for those who call In Flames sell outs, let me just tell you that changing your musical sound and experimanting is not selling out. There are a lot of bands out there who have tried to experiment and failed. In Flames for some odd reason has always remained on top and has gotten praise from critics and fans alike. If you don't like the music then don't listen to it and keep your negative opinion to yourself.

Ok don't go to the fuckin Come Clarity tour if you don't want to hear any new songs. This new album is really not that bad, it has some stronger songs and some weaker songs. It's a different album. Also, evolution is not selling out. It's simply evolution. Nobody wants to put out the same album twice, it's redendant. They have not been the same band for 3 cd's and now including this one. RTR had some old influence but you could sense a change. I love all there old cd's clay and earlier and as for the new stuff I like RTR and Come Clarity but soundtrack is okay and so is this one. If someone had introduced this cd as a new band I would probably say it was above average but it doesn't matter if you are young or old you still have to compare it to there other stuff and to what is out today. To me the old stuff is as good as the new stuff, its just different, almost like different bands but equally good.
What sickens me about most of you lot is that your posers, its trendy to only say you like brutal, straight up death metal, and then only bands that are 'underground'.
Most of you though are fake, dont talk crap, most of you love melody and variety in metal, its just that you care too much about being accepted into a bullshit clique.
Do you know how In Flames would sell out? By making an album that is Jester Race part 2, as that sound is whats popular, 100's of modern metal bands rip off the gothenburg sound wholesale, THATS WHAT SELLS.
Just by looking at the evolution of their sound you can see there making the music they want to make and being true to themselves, not whats 'popular'.
When they soundtrack came out, people said it was 'nu-metal', which is seems odd as then nu-metal was dying on its arse, the biggest bands at the time were killswitch and the like, metalcore was the 'trend'.
By the logic of most of you bashers come clarity should have sounded like fucking As I Lay Dying, but hey, it didn't.

This is what it should've been called. A very weak album IMO, with songs sounding like they are either "Come Clarity" leftovers, or rewritten versions of "Come Clarity" songs (c'mon, listen to "The Mirror's Truth" and tell me it is not the formula of "Take This Life", but watered down even further). The songs sound like In Flames just rushed through them in the studio, and did not spend much time perfecting them - there are more than a few good riffs and melodies in this mess, but they don't ever get time to develop, and are not given time of day.

The worst part, however, is the vocals. I have usually not minded Anders' attempts at clean vocals, and in some cases (albums like "Clayman" and "Reroute To Remain") they actually worked quite well, because they were used sparingly, or the songs were written around them. Although he is not a very good technical singer, when combined with his older-style extreme vocals, his cleans worked. This time around, however, his old extreme vocals are pretty much done for, replaced by something really whiny sounding that is neither truly clean nor truly death vox. Without the good contrast, his vocal weakness really comes to the forefront - let's face it guys, he just doesn't have a voice to "sell" a band that writes vocal-oriented songs. Someone like Mikael Stanne of Dark Tranquillity does, and Peter Dolving (The Haunted) or Lawrence Mackrory (ex-Darkane) definitely do, but Anders Friden does not. Normally I can look past the bad vocals if the songs behind them are well written, developed, and put together, but in this case, the background material is mediocre for the most part.

This is not to say that all of it is completely without merit. "I'm The Highway" is a song that, if it spent another few weeks being written, could have been great (and with a better vocal performance). "Alias" harkens back to "Clayman" (granted, a far cry from the glory days of "Whoracle", but still the last of their "classic-era" albums). "March To The Shore" sounds like it could have been on "Colony", at least if allowance was made for vocal differences.

Still, most of this new album from In Flames is boring, rehashed, and "going through the motions", topped off with some of the worst vocals I've heard in a very long time. Someone really needs to tell Anders that certain things he is trying do not work, and he either needs to work A LOT more on his singing voice, or he needs to rearrange his parts to incorporate more of his old extreme vocals, which provide much better contrast to his cleans than whatever it is that you call his vocals on this album.

Anyway. This album is about 5/10 from me, and if it was any other band, it would have probably been even lower.

you punks that do nothing but talk trash are like 13 year-old girls. if you don't like IF, then don't listen, nobody cares that you don't like them.
You sit around popping zits listening to Avenged Sevenfold, bunch of pvssies, all of you.
Is your band better than In Flames? No it isn't. Have you sold more albums than In Flames? No, you haven't.
Get a life, girls.

Album would've been fine if it were another band, the fact is, it isn't. Unfortunately, In Flames HAS changed the style of which they play music and although it sucks, learn to deal with it. Also, please learn how to spell and use grammar when you try and make yourself sound like a fucking genius. I am surely not the only one who would agree that your shit is just plain annoying.

St. Anger had its moments, but overall...reeked.

Dark One: get a life. The whole world does not revolve around people who hate In Flames. If anything, your statements just prove you foolish. It's okay to not like something, but not okay to state it to death and push it on others and call them dumb when they disagree with you.

I really like Alias and Delights and Angers. they both have good melodic heavy riffs to them, and they are like old in flames riffs in many ways. they're good listens, and different sounds with this cd too.

In Flames are basically doing what Metallica has done. Turn extremely gay with their songwriting.

Metallica set a standard with their early work that simply cannot be matched by dumbing down their shit for radio play. In Flames too, set a huge bar with their early work, smashing, ballbreaking brain raping riffs, complex structures and powerful lyrics.

Now they have evolved to the formulaic 3 minute: dirty, clean, dirty, clean riffing and emo lyrics, "I feel like shit, but at least I feel something" bullshit. I mean seriously, how can you defend music that gets progressively gayer? You all defend change, but what kind of change constitutes a positive one? Certainly not this "A Sense Of Purpose" crap.

It's like going from Goliath's disarm their davids, to "hot cross buns", and calling Hot Cross Buns a good progression. I mean seriously, it's no fucking contest, and this bullshit from In Flames is unacceptable.

UNFUCKINGACCEPTABLE.

Waste of talent.

Now, let me say thats it's perfectly fine for them to change in this manner if they want to appeal to masses and make money, I mean lets face it, it's how they make their living and from a business standpoint they will appeal to a broader base.

...but it doesn't make them good. In flames has gotten shittier. At least they will have their pockets lined with green and they can go out and buy a ferrari when they look back at their recent catalog and realize how fucken gay their new music is, because the only people buying it are the trend fucks who don't care about metal anyway.

I feel sorry for you, In Flames.

I got this a while ago, sure there are some good riffs but the problem is not that its too melodic, it's just some of the songwriting is just plain lazy and the vocals sound weak. Stop whining, get some power back into the vocals and music. Remember the days when in flames made albums where all the songs were good? Sounds like it's not going to happen again anytime soon. Hopefully Anders won't wear his stupid schoolboy outfit on all the forthcoming live gigs.

i dont understand why come clarity is being called great by people, who think that Reroute to Remain was average. I think reroute is filled with great songs, while Clarity was more average, with some great songs like crawl through knives, and horrible songs like the single take this life. But maybe its for the same reason that ive stopped caring about In Flames. Never really liked their old stuff, so maybe im just emooo...

They didn't have the perfect sound in the beginning of their career. What is the middle of their career (presently of course), they had the perfect sound, and just kept moving along and "de-perfecting" it as they went.

I enjoy this release, it did take a few listens to grow on me. I have liked every release from this band in one way or another and overall it's not one of thier best but far better than other bands in this genre. Many artist spend more time on image than on their music. I don't see IF becoming that at least not totally. Of course I see no harm in promoting your music in anyway possible.Sure there will ALWAYS be fans who will cry SELL OUT, there is not one band on the planet that hasn't been accused of that. I don't feel that same fire with this release and maybe a tad bit too much NU creeping in , so lets hope this begins the full circle process and find IN FLAMES moving more towards something that pays homage to days of old but doesn't forget where they stand today. This release has shining moments like that but I did find some words and parts were somewhat rushed or not thought out. The DVD is ok, would have been cool for a mini live show or something.

shit about "oooo they sold out!" it's so stupid. the concept of saying that someone sold out cuz the make a different style of music is laughable? you want to criticize a band for cutting their hair?!?! that's ignorance! Ur just too stupid or stubborn to want to hear ur "favorite band" play any other style of music cuz it breaks ur lil heart! atleast tell the fucking truth. the progression of these ppls lives alter their thoughts. it's alters their likes and their dislikes in music. and that changes what they want to play. if u dont like it, fine, but dont sit around and call them sellouts cuz u want them to play the same record from 1985 over and over with different lyrics. get over urself and find another band that can disappoint u. have a nice day! :D

Let me start by saying you probably aren't, but that's the impression I'm getting. Do first impressions suck or what? Generally it's believed that people that's all message board users do is spend their time talking shit behind a computer screen. I have a life, I don't know about some other people. So what if I'm a fan of In Flames? I like other bands that I'm sure you're a fan of as well, seems hypocritical to me. Don't get me started, man. I could go on.
