How to choose

Processors
Choosing your processor is the first step on the road to picking the right laptop. The most common processors are AMD or Intel chips. While, studies by Consumer Reports suggest that the speed of a 1.6 GHz chip and a 2 GHz chip very only slightly, the average user shouldn’t even notice. The recent incorporation of dual processors does however take up the speed a notch and should be considered if you want to do any sort of multimedia or video editing. Quad core and duo core options are available through Intel.

Memory/ RAM
For efficiency and multimedia models, 60 to 80 gigs should suffice. Tablet computers can start with around 40. If you feel like you might need more, an external hard drive would be an option. When dealing with RAM most efficiency and tablet models are going to come standard with 512 MB. Multimedia models start with around a 1GB of RAM. RAM upgrades are now a viable option due the fact that laptops are now easily modified while staying as minimally invasive as possible.

Display
Screen sizes typically break down in 17, 15-14, and 13-12 inch versions. Larger screens
are perfect for laptops that will be stationary on your desk. 15 to 14 inch screens can be
taken on the road, although some might feel that these are still too big. 13 inch screens
are perfect for road warriors. Anything smaller than 13 inches might make text too small
to see. Consider wide screens over square screens due to the fact that viewing movies
and multiple documents next to each other is much easier.

Software Bundles
Before making your purchase, make sure to investigate what types of software comes loaded on your computer. Depending on which model you go with, there are different programs included. Multimedia bundles offer basic video editing and production packages while efficiency/ budget models might only come with Microsoft Office. Major PC retailers allow you to customize your bundles when you purchase online.
