How does ABC determine which commercials to air?

All commercials and promotional announcements for ABC's programming are reviewed by our Department of Broadcast Standards and Practices to ensure compliance with company guidelines. We also impose scheduling restrictions on some commercials to make certain that they air only within programs appropriate to their target audience.

TOP

Where can I find information on the ratings system for ABC programming?

The TV ratings system, also known the TV Parental Guidelines, was established by the National Association of Broadcasters, the National Cable Television Association and the Motion Picture Association of America to give parents more information about the content and age-appropriateness of TV shows. These ratings are displayed on the television screen for the first 15 seconds of rated programming and, in conjunction with the V-Chip, permit parents to block programming with a certain rating from coming into their home.

Additional information about the TV ratings system is available at ABC's V-Chip website.

Where can I find information on the V-Chip?

Information pertaining to V-Chip technology is available at ABC's V-Chip website.

TOP

Why was my ABC programming preempted and when will it re-air?

As a national television network, ABC tries to provide a range of regularly scheduled news, sports and entertainment programs to the public. Specials, as well as breaking local and national news event coverage enable us to broaden our scope and lead to the preempting of regularly scheduled programs.

While we make an earnest attempt to avoid preempting programming too often and make every effort to reschedule each program that is preempted, our full programming schedule prevents us from guaranteeing if/when a program is re-aired. We encourage you to check your local listings and ABC.com regarding schedules.

TOP

Where can I find information on where my favorite program/episode will be reshown?

Many shows are repeated during the course of our television season. For specific programs and episodes, we suggest checking your local television listings for the exact date and time when particular episodes will be shown again or go to the schedule on www.abc.com.

TOP

Why was my favorite ABC show cancelled?

The challenge of network television is to keep pace with constantly changing tastes of the viewing public. It is unfortunate for everyone when a favorite show is cancelled, and we hate to disappointment our viewers. It is our sincere hope that other programs on ABC's schedule compensate with many hours of viewing pleasure.

TOP

Why did ABC change the time/day that my favorite program airs?

Scheduling decisions are made after careful thought and much analysis. Our goal is to match the right program with the most receptive audience. Although we realize that not every decision will please everyone, we welcome comments from viewers because they further help us understand how our programs are being received.

TOP

Where can I find out what ABC shows are available in High Definition Television?

ABC is one of the broadcast leaders in HDTV. This year ABC continues to program all of its primetime comedies, dramas and movies in HDTV, as well as Monday Night Football and a number of specials and sporting events. Programs displaying the 'ABC HD' symbol are available in this HDTV format.

TOP

Which ABC shows are closed captioned?

All ABC Television Network programming is closed captioned, with the exception of regional sports programming and the overnight news, World News Now.

TOP

What ABC programming is available in Spanish?

ABC's regular Primetime Entertainment line-up is available in Spanish through Closed-Captioned subtitles or a Spanish audio track via the Secondary Audio Programming (SAP) system.

TOP

What measures does ABC take regarding violence on television?

ABC takes its role as a national broadcaster very seriously and are equally concerned about the effect television has on our viewers.

ABC's goal is to provide a balanced schedule of programming which is suitable for families in early prime-time hours and more adult-oriented programming later in the evening. On the occasions when some of the program content may not be suitable for all of our viewers, we utilize advisories to alert our audience and allow them to make an informed and personal choice.

TOP

What are ABC's guidelines for unsolicited submissions of story ideas or concepts?

Unfortunately, ABC and The Walt Disney Company's long-established policy does not allow the network to accept for review or consideration any ideas, suggestions, or creative materials not solicited by us or our subsidiaries. Our intention is to avoid misunderstandings when projects are created internally which might be similar to submissions made to us from outside the company.

TOP

Where can I find information about ABC's public service efforts?

Through A Better Community, ABC's public service initiative, the network seeks to give its viewers the tools they need to make a difference and help build a better community. A Better Community brings viewers pro-social public service programs and messages focused on topics important to them, by combining the reach of the ABC Television Network and the power of ABC personalities. You can find out more about these initiatives on the website www.abettercommunity.com.

What are ABC's Message Board Rules and Guidelines?

Whether this is your first time online or you're a seasoned online user, we've spelled out our house rules for you here. Generally speaking, these rules simply require respect and good manners. Use common sense and you'll feel right at home.

OUR SPECIFIC HOUSE RULES ARE:

 1. We live by words online, so we don't allow obscene, racist or sexually explicit language. We also reserve the right to remove postings that defame or insult anyone, and notes that are abusive or hateful. Any harassing notes or postings that might be construed as stalking will be deleted and made available to the proper law enforcement officials. We also reserve the right to remove notes that are off the subject or not in English.

 2. No solicitations or advertisements are allowed. This includes advertisements for your business or latest get-rich-quick scheme. Such notes add clutter and devalue conversation.

 3. You may not suggest or encourage illegal activity. ABC.com will assist law enforcement officials.

 4. You must have copyright ownership of all material that you post on our bulletin boards and in our chats. No articles, recipes, song lyrics, art or graphics may be posted without the express written consent of the copyright holder.

 5. You must respect the privacy of individuals. This means no posting of phone numbers, addresses, social security numbers or any other private information.

 6. Good manners online means that you don't post the same note more than once. The online word for posting many times on one topic is "spamming." We don't allow that.

 7. You participate at your own risk on the bulletin boards, in chat and in e-mail. You take responsibility for postings under your identification and use the information provided here at your own risk. ABC.com takes no responsibility for the content or opinions posted here.

 8. ABC.com reserves the right to remove any postings (although it has no duty to do so).

 9. By posting to any portion of ABC.com, you agree to abide by ABC.com's Terms of Use.

 10. Use your common sense and have a wonderful time at ABC.com.

BOARDS HELP TOPICS
 1. Why do I need to sign in?
 2. What are threads?
 3. How do I create bold, italic and underline text within my messages?
 4. Why are asterisks replacing the text I type?
 5. Where can I ask questions or make comments about the Message Boards?

  ANSWERS

1. Why do I need to sign in?

You do not need to sign in to read messages, but in order to post messages, you will need to be a registered member of the GO Network. Registration is free, and is transferable to all GO Network sites.

If you have already registered with the GO Network directly or through one of the network sites, enter your username and login information on the sign in page. If you have not registered before, follow the instructions to create a new account. Refer to our privacy policy for a description on how information you provide for these accounts will be used.

2. What are threads?

Message threads are basically "conversations" that take place based on linkages between messages. Once a message is replied to, both the original message, the reply and all subsequent replies become part of the same thread. To view forum messages as threads, select the "Thread" message view by clicking "Threaded View". (Note that this option is not available if you are already in Threaded View. In this case, Threaded View will be replaced by Flat View.)

3. How do I create bold and italic text within my messages?

Message Boards allow a limited number of html tags to help you format and customize your messages. You can use the following tags: Bold, Italic, and Underline.

4. Why are asterisks replacing the text I type?

The Message Boards use a language filter to discourage profanity in Message Board discussions. Usually it will only filter out words that are commonly understood to be offensive. Occasionally the filter misinterprets inoffensive words as offensive. If you see a post that is offensive, please report it to us.

5. Where can I ask questions or make comments about Message Boards?

If you would like to ask questions, make comments, or report problems with the Message Boards, please mail us. We welcome your input and encourage you to provide suggestions on how the Message Boards can better serve your needs and interests.

WHICH BROWSERS DOES ABC.COM SUPPORT?

ABC.com is committed to supporting Version 4.0 and above of the following browsers: AOL, Netscape and Internet Explorer. You may be able to view some of ABC.com's features if you have an earlier version of one of these browsers. However, we recommend 4.0 browser or higher as they are faster at certain operations, more reliable, and support all of the features that ABC.com uses.

TOP

WHAT ARE THE MINIMUM SYSTEM (HARDWARE/SOFTWARE) REQUIREMENTS FOR USING ABC.COM?

For the best experience using our services, we recommend at a minimum:

PC- Pentium 90 or better with a minimum of 32 MB RAM and Windows 95, or NT 3.5.1

Mac- PowerPC with System 7.1 and 32 MB RAM

Connection Speed- 56kbps modem however, for optimal viewing, we recommend a cable modem, DSL or other broadband solution.

Browsers- Version 4.0 and above of the following browsers: AOL, Netscape and Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Screen Resolution- 800x600 - to change this see How can I change my screen resolution?

TOP

WHAT CAN I DO TO INCREASE THE SPEED WITH WHICH I ACCESS YOUR SITE?

The following suggestions may help to enhance the performance of our services:
Check your modem to ensure it is at least 56 kbps, our minimum requirement.

Turn your graphics off--an option most browsers provide. This will significantly reduce the download time of graphics-rich pages by displaying only their text. (Some browsers--such as Netscape 1.1 or above--allow you to defer image loading until after the text has displayed. While this doesn't improve overall speed, it does offer the text while images download.) Generally, you will find that we try to minimize the size of our graphics to reduce download time.

Clear your disk and memory caches. Also, check your memory cache setting to ensure it's no greater than 25 percent of your computer's total RAM.

Close any applications you are not using to increase the amount of RAM available to your browser.

Decrease your browser's verification frequency. If using Netscape, for example, set your cache preferences to verify one time per session, as opposed to every time you retrieve a page.

Note: Your Internet access provider may pass through many nodes before it is able to contact ABC.com's servers. Unfortunately, as the number of nodes increases, your page retrieval rate will suffer incrementally.

TOP

WHAT IS "CACHE" MEMORY?

A "cache" (pronounced like "cash") temporarily stores on your computer the information from web pages you have visited. We suggest users "clear" their cache occasionally, especially if a page is stuck with outdated material or information has not been refreshed. For information on how to clear your cache, see How do I clear the cache on my browser?

TOP

WHY DO I SOMETIMES GET OUTDATED INFORMATION?

ABC.com's services vary in their timeliness. Most of ABC.com is continuously updated. If you are receiving outdated information, we suggest you try any or all of the following:

Click Reload/Refresh
Clear your cache. This will force your browser to retrieve the most recent version of that document from its source on the network. For information on how to clear your cache, see How do I clear the cache on my browser?

Increase your browser's document verification frequency. For example, if you are using Netscape, select Verify Documents Every Time in Cache and Network Preferences. Please note that this may affect your navigation speed.

Note: If none of these suggestions is effective, your Internet access provider may be caching documents on its own server. In this case, you may not receive an updated document until the next time your Internet provider clears its cache. Documents that have not been accessed since the last time the cache was emptied will be current. You can call or email your Internet access provider to suggest that they increase the frequency with which they update their cache.

TOP

HOW DO I CLEAR THE CACHE ON MY BROWSER?

Please choose the instructions for the browser you use below:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 - To clear the cache in IE 4.0, you must use the 'Internet Options' menu which can be accessed by clicking once on the 'View' selection found across the top of the IE 4.0 browser between the 'Edit' and 'Go' drop down menus. Click once on the 'Internet Options' selection to display the menu. By using the tab menus at the top, select the tab titled 'General Options'. Click once on the 'Delete Files' button. You will be prompted with a pop-up box that asks if you wish to delete all temporary Internet files. Click 'OK'. You have successfully cleared your cache.

Netscape 4.0 - To access the cache menu, click on 'Edit' on the top tool bar. Move your cursor down to the selection marked 'Preferences' and select 'Network Preferences'. A menu with several selections will appear. Double click on the 'Category' marked 'Advanced', which will in turn display several options, one being for cache. Select the 'Cache' option and click on both buttons, 'Disk Cache' and 'Memory Cache'. Make certain you click 'OK' when Netscape prompts you with a message asking you if you want to remove disk/memory cache files. After you clear both disk and memory cache you can exit the 'Preferences' menu.

IS THERE ANYTHING I CAN'T ACCESS USING WEBTV?

There are three items WebTV is not compatible with on ABC.com. First, WebTV is not compatible with the latest versions of Real Audio and Video, which we use on our site. However, .wav files should work. Second, users are not able to make account modifications online. Instead, they can email us to make the changes for them. Third, WebTV does support the current versions of HTML and JavaScript that many of ABC.com's pages use, but it does not support Java.

TOP

WHAT IS "JAVA"?

Java and Java script are two very different things. What this paragraph is referring to is Java script.

Java is a software program that allows us to do interactive charts and features that make Internet content more dynamic. Java is "Web-friendly", and will run on any computer that has Java support installed. Java programs do not provide a security risk to your computer. Instead, they run within the browser itself and are prevented from reading or writing information to or from your computer's hard drive.

I BOOKMARKED TO A PAGE WITHIN YOUR SERVICE AND NOW IT DOES NOT WORK. WHY?

The page you bookmarked may have moved. Our services are always growing and improving. That means that while we work very hard to maintain consistency in the basic structure, there are times when the address to a particular page must change. Also, some pages are seasonally driven and might change or be removed when the season ends.

I AM INTERESTED IN MAKING AN ONLINE TRANSACTION ON YOUR SITE. HOW DO I KNOW IF THE SITE IS SECURE OR INSECURE?

If you are using Internet Explorer 4.0 you will see a little lock in the status bar at the bottom of the Web page. Double-click on this icon and you will see the exact type of security used.

If you are using Netscape 3.0 you will see a solid key with a blue background as an indication of a secured site.

If you are using Netscape 4.0 the "lock" icon appears in two places within the window-Main Menu Command Toolbar (top) and Status Line (bottom, far left-hand corner). The lock is always open until a user accesses a secure site. Once this takes place the icon "locks" and becomes highlighted.

I AM HAVING PROBLEMS CONNECTING TO ONE OF YOUR PAGES. WHEN I DO, MY SYSTEM LOCKS UP. WHAT'S GOING ON?

There are several possibilities:

A browser error may have occurred. If this is the case, close the browser, reopen it, and try again.

If other people can access the site, it may be a problem with your Web page cache. Clear your cache and then try reloading the site again. For instructions on how to clear your cache, see How do I clear the cache on my browser?

Your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may have a problem with their servers. Try accessing other pages, and if the problem persists, contact your ISP.

Occassionally the server generating our pages goes down. Be patient. We have engineers on call at all times to resolve problems such as these.

Screen resolution affects the size of the desktop in graphical operating systems such as Windows 95, 98, and NT. More icons, word-processing lines, spreadsheet cells, and larger graphics in graphic developing suites are displayed on the desktop using a higher resolution. The four standard PC resolutions are VGA, Super VGA, and XGA. Each resolution is measured in pixels, which are picture elements of the screen. VGA resolution displays 640 pixels across the screen and 480 pixels down. Super VGA displays 800x600 resolution while XGA display 1024x768 and 1280x1024 pixels. The most common resolution is 800x600 pixels. Seeing more on the desktop increases productivity by eliminating some scrolling and switching back and forth between windows. Ultimately, adjusting screen resolution could make one's eyes happier.

Here are procedures for changing the screen resolution in Windows 95, 98 and NT :

Start by...
Click on the "Start" menu on the bottom left hand corner of your screen Select "Settings" and then "Control Panel" Double click on the "Display" icon Click on "Settings" tab Click and hold down the left mouse button on the selector in the "Desktop Area" section. Move the selector to the left or the right to decrease or increase desktop size respectively.
