Warnings about Essential Oils:

Warning! Most oils should not be used on the skin undiluted (i.e.: "neat").

Those who have EPILEPSY should NOT use:

Camphor, Fennel (Sweet), Hyssop, Sage and Rosemary. Those who are PREGNANT should AVOID using: Ajowan, Angelica, Anise (Star), Aniseed, Basil, Bay Laurel, Calamintha (Catmint), Cedarwood (ALL types), Celery Seed, Cinnamon, Citronella, Clary Sage, Clove, Cumin, Cypress, Fennel (Sweet), Hyssop, Jasmine, Juniper, Labdanum, Lovage, Marjoram, Myrrh, Nutmeg, Origanum, Parsley, Peppermint, Rose, Rosemary, Sage, Snakeroot, Spanish Sage, Tarragon and Thyme. Those in the first three months of pregnancy should take special notice of these warnings, even if they are being used with the guidance of a knowledgeable aromatherapist.

Please note: Warnings about the use of these oils while pregnant are based on RUMORS that some oils have caused bleeding and may have contributed to miscarriages. At this time, there is NO documented EVIDENCE supporting these claims. (May 1st, 2002)

Aromatherapy and Homeopathy disciplined practitioners recommend several of these for their believed emmenagogue (stimulating of the uterine muscles) properties to their non-pregnant clients. Several other oils have some toxic properties best avoided by un-born or young children.

Please be advised and take precautions. If you are, or believe you are pregnant, please, limit your exposure to these oils, and, consult your physician.

Please consult an aromatherapist for the proper use of these oils and -

tell your doctor what you are using!

Bits and Brew wishes to bring your attention to this information so you may carefully consider your product choices.

 More Warnings about Essential Oils:

Babies, Toddlers and Children :

Avoid all Potentially Toxic and Irritant Oils, COMPLETELY!

Age less than 1 year:

Avoid completely all but Chamomile, Lavender, and Rose, Use at least twice the normal dilution rate as for an adult (half the normal concentration of Essential Oil diluted in a carrier base). Age 1 to 6 years: Using twice the normal dilution rate, use only non-toxic, non-irritant oils. Age 6 to 12 years: Use as for adults, in twice the normal dilution rate. Age 12 years and over: Use as for adults.
Notably Toxic/Hazardous to Animals - especially DOGS!!! : Pennyroyal, Tansy, and Rue.

These oils are EXTREMELY TOXIC to dogs. As little as one drop, RINSED OFF WELL WITH SOAP, the residue being then licked by a dog, CAN KILL IT!

More than one dog has lost its' life to the addition of Pennyroyal to its' shampoo. Even an un-imaginably small amount (ex: one ounce of Pennyroyal oil, added to one gallon of concentrated shampoo, then diluted, used, rinsed, and a Conditioner without the addition of Pennyroyal used and then also rinsed, the fur to then be licked by a blown-dry dog) is verifiable by a post-mortem chemical examination. DO NOT RISK YOUR BELOVED PETS LIFE. DO NOT USE PENNYROYAL ON OR NEAR YOUR DOG!

This information is provided after the consultation of the Management of BITS AND BREW with Several Veterinary experts and numerous Professional Dog Kennel/Breeder Managers. Several of these breeders, and even more Vets, have had this lesson unfortunately taught to them first hand by experience.

The anecdotal "washed dog" example (parenthetical above) is provided after the loss of an AKC dog, verified post-mortem by its' Licensed Veterinarian, as relayed by another professional breeder who reviewed the toxicological report.
