The first major stage adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkein's trilogy
This musical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE LORD OF THE RINGS began previews in February of 2006. The show will be playing exclusively in Toronto, Canada until the summer of 2007. The second cast will be headed to England, so it may not come to Broadway until 2008. I think one of the most fascinating aspects of this show is that Ontario's government invested in it on behalf of their people. That gives this show an interesting contrast of private and public investment money. Given the popularity of the movie and the number of Tolkien fans, it was probably a wise decision.

THE LORD OF THE RINGS features book and lyrics by Shaun McKenna and Matthew Warchus, with a score by A. R. Rahman and the Finnish group Vrttin, collaborating with Orchestrator and Musical Supervisor Christopher Nightingale. THE LORD OF THE RINGS is presented by Kevin Wallace and Saul Zaentz in association with David & Ed Mirvish and Michael Cohl.
