REDS 6, RAYS 3
at St. Petersburg
Friday, March 28

Reds at the plate: Jeff Keppinger, who was 3-for-5 with an RBI, had a leadoff double in the fourth inning. Scott Hatteberg was 1-for-4 with a run scored, and David Ross was 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored. The Reds took the lead in the top of the sixth after Jolbert Cabrera led off with a double and Brandon Phillips drove him in with an RBI triple. Adam Dunn had a solo homer over the center-field fence in the top of the eighth.

Rays at the plate: Carlos Pena singled off the right-field fence to score Carl Crawford and notch the Rays' opening run. Crawford was 3-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Dioner Navarro was 2-for-3.

Reds on the mound: Closer Francisco Cordero got the ball first, as manager Dusty Baker wanted the righty to have a chance to pitch against the Rays' starters. Cordero tossed one inning, giving up two hits and a run, striking out two. Setup man David Weathers pitched two innings, giving up only one run in a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the third. The righty was charged with two hits and two walks with a strikeout. Jared Burton tossed one scoreless inning, with a walk and a strikeout. Five other relievers finished out the game with one-run, three-hit ball.

Rays on the mound: Matt Garza got his final start of Spring Training. The righty is slated to pitch in Game 2 of Tampa Bay's opening series in Baltimore on Wednesday. Garza threw five innings, allowing two runs on four hits, with two walks and a pair of strikeouts. Reliever Dan Wheeler threw the sixth inning, giving up two hits and a run. Gary Glover allowed two hits and a run in one inning pitched. Al Reyes allowed a home run to Dunn in the eighth, and closer Troy Percival gave up a run on three hits in the ninth.

Grapefruit League records: Reds 16-15-1; Rays 18-7-2

Up next: The two clubs will square off again, this time in Sarasota, Fla., on Saturday, as the Reds prepare for their final home tune-up before Monday's Opening Day. Righty Johnny Cueto, who is Cincinnati's projected No. 3 starter, will get the ball vs. Tampa Bay's Edwin Jackson, who was recently named to be the fourth starter in the Rays' rotation. The game will be played at Ed Smith Stadium, with the first pitch scheduled for 1:05 p.m. ET.
