Tunisia wins Gold Medal

Rades, Sept 15 (tapex)
The Tunisian "2001" soccer team won the gold medal of the 14th Mediterranean Games Tournament by beating their Italian counterparts 1/0 in the final played on Saturday in Rades November 7 Stadium.
The goal was scored by Ali Zitouni (76th minute, on penalty kick).

Egyptian Mohamed Abdallah won the gold medal at the 10 m Airgun Shooting competition of the 14th Mediterranean games with a total of 698,9 points, at Friday's final.

Greek Constantinos won the silver medal (697,5 poinst) and Spanish Luis Jose Martinez the bronze one (625,6 points).

The Water Polo tournament of the Mediterranean games ended on Friday with Spain winning the gold medal after beating italy , silver medal 6/5.

The bronze medal was awarded to France who beat Yugoslavia 6/4 at a ranking game.

Tunisian Anis Lounifi wins gold medal

Tunisian Anis Lounifi won the gold medal of the judo tournament under 60 kg category at the Mediterranean games after beating at final on Friday Ttalian Giovanni Carella.

The silver and bronze medals of this category were won by Mmoroccan Charfi Abdelwahab El Idrissi and Spanish Roberto Cuito respectively.



Men's Handball

Gold medal for Croatia and silver one for Tunisia

The Croatian team won the gold medal of the men's Handball tournament at the 14th Mediterranean games after beating at final on Friday their Tunisian counterpart 25/24 (halftime 12-9).

Tunisia thus won the silver medal and the bronze medal was awarded to France who beat Spain 22/21 at a ranking game.

French Joel Jeannot won the 1,500 m Wheelchair gold medal during the finals of the Tunis-2001 Mediterranean games Athletics competition 4th day events, held this afternoon in Rades.

Joel Jeannot covered the distance in 3 min 39.02 sec, ahead of his compatriot Claude Issorat (silver medal with 3 min 39.56 sec) and Tunisian Ahmed Aouadi (bronze medal with 3 min 40.37 sec).

Tunisian Mohamed Farhat Belkhir ranked 4th with 3 min 40.54 sec.

Egyptian Mohamed Abdallah won a gold medal at the 14th Mediterranean games' men's Air Rifles 10 m after totalling 698,9 points in the finals held Friday in Tunis.

Greek Constantinos won the silver medal (697.5 points) and Spanish Luis jose Martinez won the bronze one (625.6 points).

Porcellato covered the distance in 2 min 24.21 sec, ahead of Moroccan

Aicha Azizi (silver medal with 2 min 25.25 sec) and Tunisian Souad Chemsi (bronze medal with 2 min 39.08 sec).

French Julien bomptemps won the gold medal of the 14th Mediterranean games' men's Sailing mistral event after totallying 11 points after the eleven stages held on September 6-14 in Sidi Bou Said.

The silver medal went to Spanish Ivan Pastor Lafuente (39 points) and the bronze to French Alex Guayder (40 points).

Tunisian Fatma Lanouar won the gold medal of the 14th Mediterranean games' women's 1500 m event after covering the distance in 4 min,10,33 sec in an Athletics forth and last day game held in Rades.

Turkish Ayhan Suryya won the silver medal (4 min 10, 69 sec) and compatriot Ebru Kakavaklioglu won the bronze one (4 min 12, 03 sec).

French petit Jean / Douroux win gold medal

French Ingrid Petit Jean and Nadege Douroux won the gold medal of the 14th Mediterranean games' women's 470 Sailing tournament after totalling 13 points after thirteen stages held on September 6-14 in Sidi Bou Said.

The silver medal went to compatriots Anne Claire Le Berre/Marie Riou (20 points) and the bronze went to Greek Mylona Dimitra/Aliki Kourkoulou (22 points).

Tunisia and Senegal, equally placed African champions

Tunisia and Senegal are equally placed as the African Taekwondo champions (all catgories included), as part of the 6th edition of this event held in Dakar, the Senegalese Capital, on the 7th-9th instant.

During these Championships, Tunisia won 4 gold medals and as many bronze. the gold medals went to Neila Chaouachi (under 55 kg), Mohamed Omrani (under 67 kg), Lobna Ayari (under 47 kg) and Souheil Hammami (under 84 kg).

The bronze went to Mohamed Amine Amri (under 58 kg), Monia Mezrigui (under 51 kg), Hichem Hamdoun (under 72 kg) and Ahmed Hosni (under 54 kg).

Tunisia beats Italy (28/22) and qualifies for quarter-finals

Tunisian national men's Handball team qualifeid for the quarter-finals of the 14th Mediterranean games tournament, by winning their second victory against their Italian counterparts 28/22 (14/8 at half-time), in a game played on Monday Evening.

Tunisia, who had won their first game on Sunday against Syria (29/22), is leader of pool D, ahead of Italy (second) who also qualified for the quarter-finals.

The Tunisian national team will play in the quarter-finals the winner of pool C's game opposing Algeria and Croatia.

Alpak won the gold medal at snatch by lifting 185 kg, ahead of Egyptian Hany Ibrahim, the silver medallist with 172.5 kg, and French Apolosio Tokotuu, bronze medallist with 167.5 kg.

The other gold medal won by Alpak was at clean-and-jerk contest by lifting 225 kg, ahead of Egyptian Ibrahim, winner of the silver medal with 217.5 kg, and French Tokotuu, the bronze medallist with 202.5 kg.

Greek Aiketirini Roditou (+75 kg) won, here this morning, the snatch gold medal by lifting 107,5 kg as part of the Tunis-2001 Mediterranean games women's weightlifting tournament 5th day events.

The silver and bronze medals went to Turkish Derya Acikgoz (105 kg) and French Sylvie Iskin (102,5 kg) respectively.

In the clean-and-jerk competition, Turkish Acikgoz won the gold medal with 130 kg, ahead Of Greek Roditou ( the silver medal with 125 kg) and French Iskin (the bronze medal with 125 kg).

Tunisian Imen Hasnaoui, who has also lifted 125 kg, ranked 4th because she outweighs her Greek and French opponents.

Victories by women athletes bring Tunisia record gold

Tunisian women athletes won four gold medals Wednesday and Thursday in the gymnastics and wrestling competitions of the 14th Mediterranean games taking place in Tunisia, September 2-15, 2001.

After Gymnast Leonie Marzouk, Wednesday, it was the turn of three women wrestlers, Fadhila Louati, Saida Riabi and Salma Ferchichi to win gold.

The latter had in fact beaten world champion Anna Gomis in the semi-finals.

Since the start of the competition, Tunisia has won 7 gold medals, already a record for this North African nation in
any Mediterranean Games.

Weightlifters earned Tunisia three gold medals on the second day of the games.Youssef Sebai won two gold medals while his team-mate Atef Jarray earned one gold medal.

More than 3,500 athletes from 23 nations are taking part in the games which opened Sunday.

1st Tunisian Medal At Swimming , 3 Mediterranean Records Beaten

Tunisian Oussama Mellouli offered on Wednesday its first medal , a bronze one , to Tunisia at day 3 of the swimming tournament .

Oussama Mallouli ranked third at the final of the 400 m medley in 4’25"20 beating his own record achieved at Tunisia’s championship last july (4’32"97).

Besides, three Mediterranean records were beaten : first by Spanish Paula Carballido at the 400m medley in 4’46"64 , thus improving the record 4’51"99 held since 1997 by French Nerdege Cliton. then, by French frank exposit at the 200 m butterfly in 1’58"97 , beating his own record held since 1993 in France.

The third record was beaten by the Spanish women’s team at the 4x100 m freestyle relay in 3’48"26 , breaking the former record also held by Spain (3’48"86).

The Tunisian athlete who beat her French counterpart 3/0 will play for the gold medal tomorrow. her compatriot Selma Ferchichi (56) also distinguished herself by eliminating another world champion, French Anna Gomez 4/0.

after losing game to Greek Zigouri Stafaloura in the first round, Tunisian Rim Garram (62 kg) beat Egyptian Abir Abdelawahed 4/0 in the second round. she will play Thursday for the bronze medal.

The silver medal was won by Italian Nicol Dal Nevo and the bronze one by Spanish Abigail Guerrero.

At clean-and-jerk, the three medals were awarded to these same weightlifters, namely Emine Belgin, gold medal, Nicol Dal Nevo, silver medal and Guerrero bronze medal.

(Tapex)--The French team won the gold medal of the bowls tournament at the 14th Mediterranean Games after beating on Tuesday evening their Italian counterpart 15/8 at finals.

Spain won the bronze medal after beating Tunisia 15/4.

Walid Jallali Qualified For Quarter Finals

(Tapex)--At day 2 of the 14th Mediterranean Games tennis tournament , Tunisian Walid Jallali has qualified for quarter finals after beating on Tuesday Italian Elia Grossi 2/0 (7/5 - 7/5).

But at women's doubles, the Tunisian pair Selima Sfar/Senda Baccar lost to Turkish Askit/Ozgen 2 /0 (6/2 - 6/4). the Jallali brothers lost in turn to Algerian Mahmoudi/Hamr El Aine 2/1 (6/3 - 6/7 - 3/6).

On the other hand, the Moroccan tennis players have all qualified for quarter finals. indeed Tahiri beat Slovenia's Kracman (6/1 6/1), El Aarej beat Turkish Ergun (7/5 6/4) and Bahia Mouhtassine beat Greek Roussi 2/0 (6/0 6/3).

At quarter finals, Selima Sfar will play today Moroccan Mouhtassine and Walid Jallali will play Greek Konstantinos Economidis

President Ben Ali kicks off 14th Mediterranean Games ''Tunis 2001''Tunis, 3 September 2001 (Tunisiaonline)--President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali , and his wife Leila, opened on September 2, 2001, the 14th Mediterranean games "Tunis 2001'', attended by 3500 athletes representing 23 Mediterranean
countries.

The opening ceremony was notably attended by Algerian president Abdelaziz Bouteflika and the Mediterranean countries' ministers of youth, sports, culture and education as well as several regional and international sports officials including in particular the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the president of the international committee of the Mediterranean games
and several champions at regional and international levels.

After the salute to the colours as the national anthem was performed and the parade of the attending teams , the officials, the referees and linesmen, the ceremony started with an imposing show entitled ''the sea, the bodies''.

1300 young girls and boys participated in this show made up of 7 pictures showing the joys of life and the epic of bodies , shapes and colors, testifying to the energy of youth and the noble message of love and freedom.

The ceremony was attended by some 60, 000 people .
