Edel Coffey presents Access All Areas, weekdays between 10 and 12.
What's the first song or record you remember?
It’s a toss-up between Elvis’s ‘It’s Now or Never’ and ‘A Little Peace’ by Nicole, which won the Eurovision in 1982. I really loved that song. Chimchiminey is in there too. I had a jewellery box that played that song so I sang that an awful lot.
What's the first gig you went to?
Suede in the SFX.
What's your desert island disc?
Groan. Impossible question. There are songs and artists I don't think I could live without ever hearing again. Wichita Lineman is one. Carole King's album Tapestry is currently another. There are many others.
What's your guilty pleasure (music related answers only please...)?
There are too many to mention. I'm liking Duffy although my love for Dusty is making me a bit resistant to her. I love a bit of Glen Campbell too. Is Scott Walker a guilty pleasure? I don't rank him as one but I suppose some might.
Who's your rock n' roll hero?
Kristin Hersh is an all-time hero of mine. Great songs, great talent, amazing songwriter, free music on her website, children on tour with her, husband ridiculed in her songs…need I go on?
What’s your party piece?
I’m an appalling performer, especially when alcohol is introduced into the mix. My party piece is usually Neil Young’s Barstool Blues or Kristin Hersh’s Your Ghost or at a push a song of my own because I can never remember how to play any others. If we’re talking karaoke my party piece is always ‘Atomic’ by Blondie.
Favourite album of last year?
Right now, I'm obsessed with Cat Power's Jukebox and Hotchip's Made In The Dark. Mumblin' Deaf Ro's 'The Herring and the Brine is my personal favourite album of 2007. I also loved Feist's 'The Reminder' and Electrelane's 'No Shout's No Calls'.
Favourite single of the year?
Hot Chip's 'Ready For The Floor'.
Best gig of this year?
So far, not too many stick out. The Breeders gig was great for nostalgia reasons but less so for length and vibes.
What are you looking forward to hearing this year?
Neil Young's archive releases. When is Sufjan going to release something new, ha?
