The Ratings Percentage Index is one tool used to select teams for the national collegiate ice hockey tournament. Only results from games between Division I teams are used. Factors involved are 1) the team's winning percentage; 2) the average winning percentage of the team's opponents; and 3) the average winning percentage of the team's opponents' opponents. These factors are multiplied by 30%, 24%, and 46% respectively.

Note: A team's record is based only on games against other Division I hockey schools which play in a Division I conference or is a Division I independent. In particular, only non-exhibition matchups between schools in College Hockey America, the ECAC, Hockey East and WCHA conferences or with independent team Sacred Heart, and non-conference games (denoted "NC" in USCHO's schedules) between these teams count towards a team's record as used in the RPI and PWR. Other games, including contests against Canadian schools and D-I programs, are not counted.

Sacred Heart is not eligible for selection in the NCAA Division I Tournament, but games with this team counts for tournament selection.
