[ABC/8:00pm] Carbon Cops. Premiere. This six-part series blends science and the environment in simple and practical terms offering up a step-by-step guide to tackling global warming. Our Carbon Cops, Lish Fejer and Sean Fitzgerald, scientists passionate about the environment, show us how we can all make the necessary changes to reduce domestic carbon emissions, and the good news is it's not that hard to achieve. In these half hour episodes we follow six families who are led through a step-by-step process of how their current use of energy is creating an uncertain future, and that a few simple changes to their lifestyle can make a huge difference. Our six families are; the Barries who have an enviable jet-setting lifestyle; the McSweeney- Glenwrights in country Victoria, living in a large Cape Cod style house totally unsuitable for our climate; the Bettenay/Fletchers, a three-generation family living in a massive rental home, who thought living together would allow them to save money, but their bills are astronomical; the student renters, whose solutions to a cold house are quick but expensive; the Lanes, a family of six living in a sprawling weatherboard, who love their luxuries and never give the environmental costs a second thought; the McKinney-Lelliots, a family of five with a house full of visitors, the oven always on and the heating cranked up all winter. The first episode features the Barrie family who passionately believe in the importance of confronting climate change - and they want to learn more. When the carbon cops arrive they find a family who believe they're doing well at saving energy, but they're in for a rude shock. The Barries have an enviable lifestyle; international holidays, luxury cars, a boat and a large renovated home in a fashionable suburb. Because of Dad's business and the family's holiday air travel their carbon count is very high. The blame game starts. The family struggle to get their carbon count down but it proves difficult. The option of offsetting their emissions is introduced. They learn all they can about offsetting their emissions from travel on planes, boats and cars; they learn about 100 per cent certified renewable green power. Matilda, their daughter says their goal is to go from a 60 tonne family to a zero carbon family.

Meanwhile, everyone is also concerned about Bug's demeanour since his encounter with Homeland Security. Nigel and Kate team up with Woody to help solve the murder of a groom on his wedding day.

[SBS/8:30pm] Cutting Edge - Chahinaz: What Rights For Women? - Chahinaz is a 20 year old university student in Algeria - she’s vibrant and questioning as any young student should be. Her questions are both personal and universal - how can I continue to live as a woman in such a traditional society? And further, how can women around the world get equal rights? On her journey from Algeria to neighbouring Morocco, from India, to Ireland, France, the US and back again to Algeria, she learns what it takes to ‘change the world’ for women. [SBS/10:00pm] Hot Docs - Sugar Town: The Bridegrooms - Women are fleeing the area in search of work or marriage in the big cities. The majority of these women do not wish to live the rest of their lives in this small agricultural place where nothing changes. But the men do not have the same luxury of choice. Tradition dictates they inherit the land and must remain in the villages. Fully aware of this situation, the astute mayor promises to find the men wives, as part of his re-election campaign. "I don't know how he came up with the idea," says Kadafi, the local coffee shop owner, "but he promised that if we voted for him, he would organise a trip abroad to find us a wife." (From Greece, in Greek and Russian, English subtitles) (Documentary) G
[SBS/1:25am Wed] Rainbow Bird And Monster Man - This documentary tells the life story of Tony Lock, who was sexually abused for ten years from age four to fourteen, and who, thirty years later, did something about it. This tale of murder, revenge, power and denial in an isolated rural community highlights the way society delivers justice, and charts an individual's struggle to free himself from the torment which has shadowed him since childhood. Writer and director Dennis K. Smith combines dramatic elements and reconstructions with interviews with Lock, whose chatty, friendly presence belies the gravity of his story. First Review: Sea Patrol

Given Border Security has become one of TV's most successful brands, it was only a matter of time before someone decided to capitalise on the interest as a weekly drama.

The opening scene of Sea Patrol jumps right into the action as the crew of HMAS Hammersley are about to board an illegal fishing vessel. Guns are aimed, decisions are made, shots are fired. There’s no mucking about with backstory here.

And with loaded pistols aimed, McCune’s Kate McGregor is struggling to perform her job efficiently against the putrid smell of the fisherman’s catch. The audience is compelled to consider the dilemmas and knife-edge decisions that our navy face as part of their day at the office.

From here the show moves toward the personal lives of its central characters. Kate is new to the Hammersley but hints at some former emotional involvement with Commander Mike Flynn (Ian Stenlake). Insert unresolved sexual tension now? Maybe, maybe not.

Others in the Hammersley crew include Jeremy Lindsay-Taylor, Saskia Burmeister and Josh Lawson. Stenlake’s character isn’t afforded much character development in the opening episode, but Lindsay-Taylor looks like he will be a force to be reckoned with as the cocky “Buffer.”

As the episode progresses, our characters face a medical emergency and a sea rescue. Some scenes are clunkily-handled with expository dialogue, contrasting the opening scene that expect the viewer to get up to speed.

This is a big budget, aerial shot, Queensland coast, pounding-music drama. The sweeping aerial shots and vistas all look terrific in Sea Patrol and will appeal instantly to a nation of coastal-dwellers.

As storytelling Sea Patrol opens very traditionally, drawing upon rock-solid lessons learned from genre dramas such as Water Rats or even Patrol Boat. Dramatic jeopardy, some white-knuckle action, a little romance and character development, just a dash of humour. The huge Hammersley cuts through the water like Nine charting the safest of smooth-sailing waters.

The first episode
in the hands of Blue Heelers' co-creators finds the choices quite broad, aiming for the biggest possible audience. What might it have been as a raw, grainy, docudrama verite? Wildside on a boat? Blue Murder or Phoenix at sea? Who knows…

Creative choices aside, Sea Patrol is proudly glossy and aspirational. It is an assured and confident genre piece that deserves a big audience and much-needed hit for the Nine Network.

Sea Patrol premieres 8:30pm Thursday July 5 on Nine.

1 vs the Kids

Two more shows coming up on Nine illustrate further interest in braniac kids on television.

Nine will air I Am a Child Genius, a special looking at smart kids, including a 3yo member of MENSA, a 6yo who players poker online (how healthy isn't that?) and a child who published their first book at 8.

It will be followed by a "Kids" edition of 1 vs 100. No details on this yet, but sounds fun.

As reported elsewhere, Rove will produce TEN's So You think You're Smarter than a Fifth Grader?

Smart kids are popping up everywhere.... but these are not completely original formats. Does anybody remember phrases like "Number 6 thanks Mr. Harwood?"

The Nine shows air on Monday July 9.

Wiggle to front Seven show.

Seven has announced a new observational series, RSPCA Animal Rescue.

"Blue Wiggle" Anthony Field will present the show which looks at veterinarians and the challenges faced by the RSCPA.

Field promises, a "
rollercoaster of emotions watching the stories unfold on this series, particularly those with neglected animals.”

It was filmed in Victoria, NSW and Queensland.

Press Release:

Anthony Field will make his first foray into prime-time television on Channel Seven’s new observational documentary series, RSPCA Animal Rescue.

Best known as the blue Wiggle in the hugely successful children’s group The Wiggles, Field will present and narrate the series featuring the tough daily assignments and high pressure work faced by the RSPCA’s inspectorate and veterinary staff.

“I’m really excited about my involvement in the series RSPCA Animal Rescue,” said Field today. “I’ve seen the great work vets have done before. But to get to see the sad, cruel, ignorant and misguided things the owners of animals can do to their pets, and then what the men and women of the RSPCA have to do to rescue the animals, is amazing.

“I had no idea the extent of good they do for animals as well as their owners. It may be education, prosecution or rescue from an unforeseen accident. Whatever it is, it’s always with the animal’s best interests at heart. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions watching the stories unfold on this series, particularly those with neglected animals.”

Indeed, it’s a fierce and sometimes emotional journey for the inspectors on RSPCA Animal Rescue as they confront cases of horror and heartbreak during their job to rescue the lost, neglected, abandoned and abused animals of Australia – a country with one of the greatest pet populations per capita in the world.

The show was filmed during the summer months of 06/07 in the states of New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland and sees some extraordinary rescues – from a cow in a river, a horse in a ditch, to a wounded pelican shot by an arrow and many cats and dogs who’ve become hurt or been left without adequate care.

More than 130,000 animals each year are given shelter at one of the many branches of the RSPCA across Australia. Many are rescued by the inspectors, some surrendered, and others are brought to their clinics by one of the many Animal Ambulances that support the main branch offices. RSPCA Animal Rescue gives the viewer a close-up look at the work and care the RSPCA give to animals. It’s a sometimes high drama environment where frontline staff make life and death decisions everyday, occasionally risking their own safety for the life of an animal.

RSPCA Animal Rescue is coming soon to Channel Seven in ’07.

Californication to air in 2007

Ten has confirmed a 2007 launch of Showtime's upcoming US series, Californication.

In a line-up announcement for the second part of 2007 Ten will also have another attempt at the US series of The Office.

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader will launch in September from Roving Enterprises.

Ten will also revisit The Office (US) which died last time it was screened. It is a hit in America, which hadn't seen the UK version first.

Unlike its rival networks, there is no new Australian drama.

No word on previously-announced US series Raines, Rules of Engagement, 3 Pounds or unaired eps of Jericho, Smallville and The Shield.

Also interesting to see no word on any return of The Con Test.

Press Release:

Network Ten today unveiled a winning line-up for the second half of 2007 featuring four new programs.

They join new episodes of TEN’s established favourites – including Thank God You’re Here and Australian Idol – and the biggest sporting and red carpet events of the year:

The AFL Grand Final, the Rugby World Cup and the 2007 ARIA Awards.
TEN’s chief programming officer, David Mott, said: “These diverse new and returning shows bring further depth to our schedule and absolutely speak to our target 18-49 year-old audience.

“Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader, Thank God You’re Here, Australian Idol and So You Think You Can Dance will engage the entire family, while Californication is the most original adult comedy since Sex and the City.

“With all new episodes of our established favourites continuing well into the year – including House and NCIS – this line-up will see TEN remain highly competitive in our core 18-49 profile and continue to dominate under-40s.”

New programs:

Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader? – Australia's own version of the hit US format pits ten year-olds against grown-ups in the knowledge stakes. Hosted by Rove McManus and produced by Roving Enterprises, each week adults will try –and fail – to prove they are, in fact, smarter than a fifth grader. Launches in September.

Californication – confronting, controversial and hysterically funny, get ready for David Duchovny's (X-Files) triumphant return to television. Comedy/drama about a self-destructive novelist trying to re-launch his writing career and help raise his teenaged daughter; his obsession with honesty and his battles with drink, drugs and relationships are simultaneously destroying and enriching his career. TEN will premiere this hotly-anticipated new series soon after its US debut.

America's Next Top Model – making its runway debut on Australian commercial television on 6 July, America’s Next Top Model chronicles the transformation of everyday young women into potentially fierce supermodels.

The Office (US version) – Emmy Award-winning comedy “mockumentary” about the day-to-day lives of employees in the fictitious Dunder-Mifflin Paper Company. The 2007 US finale of The Office (17 May) was the number one show in 18-49 (beating Ugly Betty), delivered NBC's highest 18-49 rating and largest overall 18-49 audience in timeslot since launch (22 February).

Special events:

TEN's AFL finals – all in High Definition digital (HD).

AFL Grand Final – in HD and for the sixth consecutive year exclusively live on TEN and expected to again be the most-watched television event of the official ratings year.

The Rugby World Cup – 20 pool matches, including all those involving the Wallabies and other leading rugby nations, plus all eight finals and the Rugby World Cup Final live. All TEN's broadcasts and associated programming will be hosted from France by TEN's own rugby tragic, Bill Woods, and gifted poet, radio presenter and passionate rugby devotee, Rupert McCall. With expert comments from rugby greats Ben Tune and Ben Darwin.

2007 ARIA Music Awards – the Australian music industry’s night of nights with the biggest stars performing live.

Kenny and Boytown (movies) – no longer a three-year wait for cinematic hits to come to free TV, TEN brings the most successful Aussie movies of 2006 exclusively to free to air TV.

personalities, new scenarios, and more laughs than ever. Launches on 11 July.

The 2007 audition tour went wider than ever, visiting 18 cities across the country. Australian Idol has won three Logie Awards, produced ten number one artists and draws millions of viewers each week.

So You Think You Can Dance – returning for its second season on TEN, the show that redefines dance and draws around 10 million viewers in the US each week. Hosted by Cat Deeley, contestants endure a gruelling 12-week competition to become America's number one dancer.

The Wedge – the zany characters of Wedgedale are back with their unique brand of sketch comedy.
