1. Mother Nature is Not Our Friend

Comment #105781 by dhweaver on January 1, 2008 at 8:11 pm

To answer Forest Gump's question: We are all floating "accidental like" a feather in the wind, and the wind doesn't give a damn where she blows us. That's not the scary part though. Man has created a new wind for the feather's course to be manipulated by. At least the old wind was proven to sustain life for 100+ million years.

Let's call the "daddy's" over-emphasized mannerisms the result of deep sexual, dogmatic repression and move on.

Once again, I can hear the southern baptist preacher on Sunday:

"You hear what them scientist types are sayin now. All life is made of the same guts. Hehehe. Well Mr. Scientist I had a steak for dinner last night, and it didn't taste nothin like my salad. Am I right...Praise the lord!

"I got as far as "Stalin".

Next."

Hilarious!

I'm sure there are many other keywords which should make us say "Next".

Unfortunately, I read as far as "John Cornwell is director of the Science and Human Dimension Project at Jesus College". That's 10 minutes of my life I'll never get back. Someone at RichardDawkins.net should warn us with some kind of huge sign "Warning! What you are about to read is babblings from a Flea."

I wanted to go, but the idea of being penned up in the overflow room watching everything on a monitor isn't very exciting. Oh, and with my luck, the overflow room is exactly where I'd be. I don't think the overflow room is cheaper either.

It will be a great convention though. Hopefully the video from the convention finds its way to this site.

Friend at the wedding: Forgive me Jesus, but this "so called" wine tastes like piss. What exactly did you do to the water?

Jesus: My mother made me do it.

You realize this finding allows for a whole new series of "your momma's so fat" jokes. I'll be the first idiot to do one."

Your momma's so fat, god had to make a billion light year hole for her to fit in heaven.

8. Richard Dawkins at the Edinburgh Book Festival

Comment #65665 by dhweaver on August 25, 2007 at 12:12 pm

I completely agree mdowe. Statements like that show just how prejudice even the moderates can be towards atheists. We're not extremists...when will they understand?

PaulJ's right too. There's no purpose in getting upset over this article when it's clearly pointless.

9. Mother Teresa's '40-year faith crisis'

Comment #65662 by dhweaver on August 25, 2007 at 11:42 am

This article is very powerful. I'm sure there are many Christians (Catholics) who look up to people like Mother Teresa when they're dealing with doubt about the existence of God. The crutch of "if my faith is good enough for Mother Teresa then it's good enough for me" has been broken for them. I hope more revealing ammunition against faith comes to light from iconic people of religion like her.

10. Democratic Candidates on a Personal God

Comment #64553 by dhweaver on August 20, 2007 at 4:54 pm

Ahhh, the sweet power of prayer. Does everyone remember the mine collapse in Kentucky 2005? 16 miners were trapped. Thousands of family and friends were praying their asses off. After the third day of searching a message came suddenly over the loud speaker that all the men were found alive.

The church bells rang out in celebration. Every live media outlet was showing live pictures of family and friends crying tears of joy and praising god for answering their prayers. For three hours they celebrated in ecstasy.

To everyone's horror, word was spread that there had been a terrible mistake. In fact only one survivor was found and the rest were dead. Three hours their family and friends celebrated while all along they were really dead.

If there is a god, he is an asshole. But of course, we all know better.

11. After 60 Years, Will Pakistan Be Reborn?

Comment #63706 by dhweaver on August 15, 2007 at 1:25 pm

The story of post war Pakistan is repeated all over the world. Practically every Latin American country has the same story of one ruthless dictatorship after another with small pockets of time where democracy temporarily worked and then collapsed into another dictatorship. The US has to take their fair share of the blame. Any dictatorship who hated communism more than they hated democracy was considered a friend worth supporting. Unfortunately, support came in the form of money and weapons used to sustain their ruthless power over their people rather than fight communism. The vast suffering of the cold war is often overlooked. It's hard to know what caused more damage...lines drawn on a map by the British in the late 19th and early 20th century, or US's support of evil to fight a greater evil in the later half of the century.

But this is all just bad politics and has nothing to do with religion right? Ummmm...NO!!!

Comment #62969 by dhweaver on August 12, 2007 at 4:29 pm

What does a rise of atheism mean for a sociologist of religion? Whether they're faith-heads or not, wouldn't a future that brings a decline in religion also reduce the need for this occupation? Not that sociologists of religion are enemies to our cause, indeed they do have a purpose, I just wonder if a bold atheist movement would lead to their obsolescence. If it would, couldn't we expect to see more and more articles from sociologists of religion being less than objective in their findings.

13. Science and the Islamic World

Comment #62754 by dhweaver on August 11, 2007 at 8:04 am

Perhaps science in the Muslim world is retarded by the 8 or so calls to prayer everyday. It would be difficult in the years before video technology to closely observe an experiment when you have to leave the lab every 2 hours to go pray. The Muslim scientists return to the lab 30 minutes later: "Damn It Jabar! We've missed the reaction again…Let's start from the beginning.

Comment #62164 by dhweaver on August 8, 2007 at 1:14 pm

OK, Left Behind video game! Now that's just insanity. If Christians don't believe they're going to be left behind, why the hell do they need a video game about being left behind, much less those stupid ass books and movies? And just who do you suppose the bad guys getting shot to shit in this video game are? Hmmmmm.

I hope they make me into an Atheist Darklord they have to kill at the end of the 9th level before they get to the final Anti-Christ level. Bring it on Kirk Cameron!!!

15. God in the Military - The Pentagon and its Christian Embassy

Comment #61973 by dhweaver on August 7, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Calm down fellow atheists. Let's not forget the Dobbs footage is about the Defense Department issuing "corrective action" to the seven high ranking officers taking part in the Christian Embassy video. That's still proof that it isn't cool in the US Military to go around proselytizing even under Bush's authority.

I was a US Marine myself during the Clinton years, and as I recall most people in the service kept their religious beliefs to themselves. Talking about God got the usual quiet chuckles unless of course it was from a high ranking officer (you wouldn't dare be caught laughing then). That's one of the most disturbing aspects of the video. 2 and 3 star Generals & Admirals should definitely know better. I hope the "corrective action" is more severe than the name implies.

16. New age therapies cause 'retreat from reason'

Check out this link for Healthy Christian Living:

http://healthychristianliving.com/prostate_health_in_90_days.htm

Apparently, Larry Clapp, Ph.D., J.D., finds a strict diet of lemonade and herbal tea for 10 days will cure colon cancer. You also have to check out the ionizing foot bath which also purges toxins out of the body for the low, low price of $1,140.00.

The ionizing foot bath looks exactly like the time machine from Napoleon Dynamite.

I'll learn to block quote soon but my favorite two quotes from the site are:

"You'll know your colon is healthy if you produce a regular stool, two to three times a day, that's soft but well-formed, two inches in diameter, and eighteen inches long. Does yours measure up? If not, it may be time for action! Fortunately, it's fairly easy to cleanse even the most "clogged" and parasite-infested colon and set yourself on the road to optimal health."

"Every day we are exposed to about 50,000 chemicals from the environment, water and the food we eat. These chemicals poison the blood and circulate throughout the body, creating a toxic effect which can impact every organ in the body. Because our bodies are not adapted to processing and eliminating most of these chemicals, they accumulate over time causing chronic conditions, allergies and a number of other physical/emotional problems."

Don't forget good Christians; God created these 50,000 chemicals in the environment to attack your bodies everyday because he loves you.

But for now, I'll enjoy it.

I like the idea of a bunch of people using it for a couple days. Picture the rest of her body with that face while she's putting on latex gloves and says "Now turn your head and cough."

Wait a second. Did I just give her credit of being a real doctor?

Yorker,

In my first post I was asking how one ads the avatar to the postings. I can't seem to figure it out. Everyone using that pic for a couple of days will certainly have RD wondering what the hell is going on with his site.

I wonder if Miss Livingstone has ever tried faith healing on her face.

How can I make that picture my avatar? I want to scare the hell out of you people every time I post.

Don't just call this post troll or offensive. You know damn well that picture was purposefully used to depict her as a whack job.

22. Beyond Belief 2006 Videos

The series has made me a huge Sam Harris fan. I can't wait to read Letter to a Christian Nation. I'm a newbee to atheism but it's clear Sam and Richard think very much alike. Richard more of the scientist and Sam more the philosopher. Both are incredible public speakers. It would be a mind blowing debate between the two of them if they actually disagreed on something.

_J_ your link to weeflee's personal video was great stuff. Here's my favorite quote from the video.

"The bible I think really is the word of god. And I know there are many contradictions or apparent contradictions that people will talk about. For me I guess the biggest reason (for belief) is Jesus himself. And that's really where I want to leave you."

I think I've finally figured it out. Whenever a believer's head is about to explode over the contradictions and irrational logic of the scriptures, all they have to do is say "Jesus" and their brain immediately grinds to a hault. "Wow...that was close. Thank you Jesus for allowing me to live in delusion another day. Amen."

I live in Lancaster, PA. Yeah, I'm talking about the place where thousands of people are partying like it's 1699. Ok, so most people around here aren't Amish, but the red here is deep and dark. 75% of my relatives the women wear coverings and the men drive black cars. In their churches, the women sit on the one side and the men sit on the other (in order that they don't have sexual thoughts during prayer service. I'M NOT KIDDING!!!) Coming out scares me to death. I envy you people who live in areas of the world that are so tolerant to individual beliefs.

Templeton money? Heck he's going for the big time with his sermon of "theistic evolution". Sounds like a new sect of Christianity to me. Damn, that's all we need in the states is another mega-church formed around Collin's new idea.
I can see the new books now to "complement the bible". I can even hear the first sermon "Let us all turn to the first book Geneticisticuvus Chapter 2,373,230,213,401 verses 4,219,034,012,399. And then God killed the last of the heathen Spyronoids, for they mocked him with their inefficient photosynthesis."
