About South Shore Hospital
South Shore Hospital is a charitable, not-for-profit, tax-exempt, regional provider of acute, outpatient, home health, and hospice care for the 600,000 residents of Southeastern Massachusetts.
South Shore Hospital's home health care division, South Shore Visiting Nurse Association, includes South Shore Visiting Nurses, Hospice of the South Shore, and Home & Health Resources.
A difference in our people
Our 800-member medical staff represents all leading medical
specialties, from allergists
to urologists. Medical staff members are board-certified in their medical
specialties, having completed up to seven years of full-time accredited
training beyond medical school.
No other hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts has such a large,
experienced and diversified medical staff. Our 1,500-member nursing staff represents all leading nursing
specialties, from emergency and critical care to community health. We
employ more nurses than any hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts because
we have refused to replace licensed nurses with lesser skilled patient care aides or technicians staff, as has been
the trend in most acute-care hospitals.
We employ about 3,500 people, with a $147 million payroll. Our staff is supported by a team of 600 volunteers, who annually provide more than 67,700 hours of service valued at more than $1.7 million. No other hospital in Southeastern Massachusetts has as many employees or this level of volunteer support.
A difference in our programs
We’re here to help families when they need us most: at the start of a
new life … at the
end of life … and at dozens of intervals in between. We are the region’s
leading provider
of emergency, critical care, maternity, pediatric, cardiac, oncology,
surgical, rehabilitation, outpatient, home health and hospice care. South Shore Hospital partners with leading academic medical centers to
bring their physician experts to our region. Examples include:
- Neonatal intensive care, pediatric emergency, inpatient pediatric services, and outpatient pediatric clinics, provided in association with physicians from Children’s Hospital Boston. Breast Care Center, cardiology, reproductive endocrinology, gynecological oncology, urogynecology, and a surgical residency program, provided in association with physicians from Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Select clinical cancer trials, offered in association with Dana-Farber/Partners Cancer Care. Pediatric outpatient specialty clinics (cardiology, gastroenterology, special needs), provided in association with physicians from New England Medical Center. Stroke care and brachytherapy prostate cancer treatment, provided in association with physicians from Massachusetts General Hospital.
- Emergency medicine residency program, in association with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
A difference in what we do
According to Boston Business Journal, we are the largest independently operated hospital in Eastern Massachusetts, with the second largest emergency center and maternity center. South Shore VNA is the state’s fourth largest home health service. More than four in ten people from our region who need hospitalization choose South Shore Hospital. Boston’s academic medical centers collectively care for fewer than 20 percent of the people in our region, as reported by HealthShare Technology an independent performance analysis firm. At a time when many hospitals are unable to make important capital investments, we continue to reinvest in equipment and our physical plant to help our patients and physicians. We recently completed a $65+ million expansion of our maternity, surgery and emergency services to meet growing community needs. South Shore Hospital demonstrates its commitment to the critical care needs of our patients through:
- The state’s first and only community-based newborn intensive care unit, staffed 24/7 by board-certified neonatologists affiliated with Children’s Hospital Boston24/7 on-site medical coverage in our critical care units by board-certified anesthesiologists. 24/7 on-site medical coverage for obstetrical patients by board-certified OB/GYNs. 24/7 on-site internal medicine hospitalist program to support community based physicians in providing care to their hospitalized patients. A pediatric emergency program staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency physicians. An inpatient pediatric unit organized and facilitated by board-certified pediatricians affiliated with Children’s Hospital Boston.
- Full-time clinical chairs of surgery, medicine, obstetrics, pediatrics, and emergency care (typically only found in academic medical centers).
We are a leader in public accountability and demonstrating benefit for our community, as evidenced in our partnerships with schools, employers, and seniors. We have provided more than $70 million in free care to people in – and outside our region – over the past ten years.
Since 1989, our charitable Foundation has raised more than $30 million from 80,000 donors. No other not-for-profit organization in Southeastern Massachusetts has a more successful philanthropy program.
A difference in how we do it
Nine in ten patients routinely report that they would recommend South
Shore Hospital to
their family and friends, as measured by Press Ganey Associates, the
nation’s largest independent patient satisfaction monitoring firm.
South Shore Hospital scored 99 out of a possible 100 in its recent survey by The Joint Commission, earning the agency’s Gold Seal of Approval.
Moody's Investors Service rates us "A2 with a Stable Outlook," making us one of Massachusetts’ highest rated community hospitals, at a time when community hospitals as a group continue to struggle.
