(For a list of Elegantly Dressed Wednesday Bloggers, please visit this page)

Last August, as an antidote to Half-Nekkid Thursday, on which bloggers post a photograph of some unclothed part of their body, I came up with the idea of Elegantly Dressed Wednesday.

The idea is very simple. To take part, all you have to do is post a picture of an elegantly dressed person on your blog. It can be you, or it can be someone else. You can post your picture on a Wednesday, or any other day, as long as you make a genuine attempt to delude your readers into thinking it is actually Wednesday. And if you link to this post, or to some other part of this blog, then you automatically become entitled to display the button at the foot of this post.

The flame has been kept alive by a number of bloggers, most notably Dave Hill and Ms Baroque. So, in honour of them both, I’d like to dedicate the first Elegantly Dressed Wednesday on these pages to them.

And what an EDW it is. Feast your eyes on the dapper fellow above, and note in particular the rakish disarray of the collar, the pukka rumple of the handkerchief and the lightly tinted specs. This is Anthony Claude Frederick Lambton, better known as Lord Lambton. As a rule, Lambton was very smartly turned out, so it must have been a cause of considerable distress to him when, in his leisure moments from working in Ted Heath’s government, he appeared on the front of a Sunday newspaper wearing very little, flanked by two hookers and smoking a dooby.

In later years, when asked why he had paid for the services of prostitutes, Lambton replied: “people sometimes like variety. It’s as simple as that”. He was right, so look out for some more dapper and colourful characters in future Elegantly Dressed Wednesdays.

Hi Ben

I’m so glad you started blogging again and have kept EDW. I never got around to joining it before but I did do an EDW once - Wednesday Addams. Thanks for publishing the code. I’m much better at inserting these things these days and will join up straight away. Congratulations on book publication too.

Ben, thank you for the mention - and I don;t think I need to say anything about how happy I am to see you back and blogging! Hackney Lookout was one of my most regular lookout posts.

I hope you don’t think my EDW of today is too flippant; it gave me much pleasure, and I think does really further the cause of elegance, as a state of mind.

Hurrah! I’ll link you. Hope the baby’s well.

I always found Half-Nekkid Thursday a tad undignified, but Elegantly Dressed Wednesday is rather more up my alley. I shall subscribe immediately. Even though it’s Thursday…
