Recreation and Park Department and other city agencies continue to receive average ratings in 2007 City Survey

In the 2007 City Survey, released in April, respondents rated city parks with a C+ grade, a rating that has remained stable for the past few years. Frequency of park visits has remained constant over the past few years as well. The ratings of recreation program quality were significantly lower this year
than in 2004. RPD is featured in Chapter 5 (pages 35-39) of the 2007 City Survey. Click here to download the full survey.

Highlights of RPD’s public report card include:
• 34 percent of respondents report going to a city park at least once a week in the past year, and 24 percent visit parks at least once a month.
• Residents of Districts 1, 2, 5, 7, and 8 give higher grades to their parks than people living in other districts.
• Residents living in Districts 5 and 8 are the most likely to visit a park at least once a month.
• Residents of South and Eastern Districts are less likely to visit parks at least once a month.
• African Americans are the least likely ethnic group to visit a City park. Whites are the most likely to visit a park: 41 percent of white respondents visit a park at least once a week and are 2.4 times more likely than African Americans to visit a park at least once a month.

RPD POLICIES AND PLANS
New Volunteer Policy
After years of non-resolution, RPD Management and the Commission has approved a Volunteer Policy that park advocates find very exciting! With help from NPC, the Department recognized that to make everyone's efforts more productive, staff should develop work plans for each park, detailing projects that volunteers can work on. In addition, volunteers can now help to envision and implement future landscape improvement projects, as well as perform agreed tasks that gardeners do not have time for.
