Abe was a career-minded bachelor until he fell in love with Alexandra "Lexie" Brooks. The two met will working at the Salem Police Department, and in a shocking discovery, realized that Lexie was Stefano DiMera's daughter! Abe and Lexie soon married and decided to start a family. Although Abe struggled with Lexie's devotion to her father, their love for one another remained strong.
After several unsuccessful attempts at conceiving a child of their own , Abe and Lexie decided to adopt. When they adopted baby Isaac, Abe assumed he was the child of Stefano's alcoholic niece. However, Stefano was using the baby in his latest diabolical scheme...involving Hope, Lexie, and a baby switch.
Once Lexie's true part in the baby switch came out, Abe knew their marriage was over. He couldn't condone her behavior, and she couldn't understand why he wasn't willing to do whatever it took to keep their baby. He filed for divorce, but Lexie was desperate to renew their relationship. Only after Lexie selflessly put herself in danger to help save Hope, did Abe consider reconciliation. Abe and Lexie finally put the past behind them, and got the most wonderful news when Lexie discovered she was pregnant. Baby Theo was born 9 months later, and made Lexie even more concerned about Abe's dangerous job as Chief of Police. Her instincts rang true when Abe became the first "victim" of the notorious Salem Stalker.
During his rescue from the island with other Stalker victims, Abe was injured when a tidal wave struck the rescue boat. He was reunited with Lexie and his family, but soon discovered he was going blind. Combined with being blind, Abe also learned he was impotent. This caused a lot of tension in his already fragile marriage to Lexie. Abe became quick-tempered, and was left feeling inadequate to his beautiful wife. He accused Lexie of cheating on him with her friend, Tek, and had difficulty trusting her. Eventually, she did end up cheating on Abe with Tek, which looked to be the final straw for Abe. But in the long run, both had decided that marriage and family were important to them, and agreed to work things out.
After undergoing a medical transplant, Abe was able to see again, but shortly after, he was faced with tragic news... Lexie was presumed killed in a car accident. He struggled to move on without his beloved Lexie. His eyes began to deteriorate again, and he had to undergo a second transplant. Shortly after his vision was restored for the second time, he was elated to discover that Lexie was indeed alive and being held hostage in the deep tunnels of Salem. Now, the two look forward to working on a future together as husband and wife and raising their child, Theo.
