BOB DYK 1936-2008
On March 22nd, 2008, WGAN Reporter and Anchor Bob Dyk passed away at the age of 71.
Bob joined WGAN in 2004, stepping in when needed to cover numerous breaking news events, court cases, and election night coverage. Bob's work was instrumental in WGAN receiving multiple awards from both the Associated Press and the Maine Association of Broadcasters during that time.
Reporting was Bob's great love, ever since he began his career in broadcasting as a CBS News editorial assistant during the 1960 Democratic National Convention. He participated in one of the earliest brodacasts of ABC's "Nightline" program when he found himself the only US television reporter in Tehran filing stories after the 1979 seizure of the U.S. Embassy and American hostages. He is perhaps best known locally for his lengthy stint as an anchor and later reporter with WMTW-TV for almost 20 years. He was a newsman through and through, and he will be dearly missed.
All of us in the WGAN News Department offer our condolences to Bob's wife, Trish, and his family. You can hear some audio samples of Bob's past work by clicking here. WGAN and Portland Radio Group General Manager Cary Pahigian recorded a special tribute to Bob that aired on WGAN; you can listen to it by clicking here. (Windows Media required)
