Hamilton battles on through the pain barrier

Group 1 report   Group 2 report

ANTHONY Hamilton played through the pain barrier to win the third Championship League Snooker group.

Hamilton, 36, defeated Ali Carter 3-2 in the final despite suffering with a neck injury for the majority of the final day.

I first came here today I thought I had no chance because it was really painful," said Hamilton (pictured right).

couldn't play anything off the cushion as I couldn't get down and do any stretching.

was a repetitive strain injury as I put so much practice in before the World Championship qualifiers and my neck went early today. To win the final is a bit of a joke as I was all over the place.

a great tournament and I’ve really enjoyed it. It will be nice to play in the final group to try and get a spot in the Premier League.

play in that would be something brand new, be more match practice than you can shake a stick at and bring some extra income. You can’t lose by being in the Premier League."

The Championship League Snooker is the latest initiative by Barry Hearn’s sports promotions company Matchroom Sport and all the action is being screened live on three betting websites – Betfair, Bet365 and William Hill.

There are large financial incentives for all the players as there is a total prize fund of more than £180,000, while the winner will also claim a spot in the prestigious Premier League.

Hamilton now joins Ryan Day and Ken Doherty in the final group in May with a further four players set to join them in the coming months.

Carter has now lost in the last two Championship League finals but, due to the format, gets another chance as he and six other players will play in the fourth group.

This will be held on Wednesday, March 11 and Thursday, March 12 and the group also includes 2005 World Champion Shaun Murphy.
