Murphy becomes fourth man into final group

Previous groups One   Two   Three

SHAUN Murphy has become the fourth player to advance into the final group of Championship League Snooker.

Murphy, 25, the 2005 World Champion, clinched his place by defeating Ali Carter 3-2 in the last match of Group 4 to move closer to playing in the 2008 Premier League.

very, very pleased," said Murphy. "I've had a great season and up to second in the provisional world rankings so I have a great chance to be in the Premier League by right if I win the World Championship or am number one.

I'm happy to be in the last group to try and win this wildcard and I look forward to it.

(the Championship League) is different to anything else and you play such a lot in such a short space of time.

the last few days I've played more frames than in any other tournament and it can be draining.

not everyone practises as much as I do and Im used to doing six or seven hours practise a day."

For Carter it was more heartbreak as he has lost in the last three finals in the event, which is being screened live on three betting websites.

However, with 100 for each frame won and further bonuses for reaching the semi-finals and final, Carter's spell at the competition has been profitable.

He has collected 17,800 from 12 days of snooker, a total higher than what a semi-finalist in a ranking tournament would earn.

Carter is set to add to that figure as, due to the format, he now moves to Group Five, which will be held on Monday, April 14 and Tuesday, April 15.

Australian Neil Robertson, winner of two major ranking events, and world number 13 Stephen Lee will be among Carters rivals at Crondon Park Golf Club in Stock, Essex.

Murphy now joins Ryan Day, Ken Doherty and Anthony Hamilton in the final group in May and the overall winner will qualify for the 2008 Premier League competition, an event Murphy has played in before.

He added: "The Premier League is one of the best events on tour. Its not a ranking tournament but its a great event.

do a brilliant job, its well organised, well attended and a pleasure and privilege to be part of."
