Grand Theft Auto IV Online Strategy Guide

Game Guide
If you're reading this guide, then you've joined the ranks of millions upon millions of people who have purchased Grand Theft Auto IV, the much-anticipated title that carries on the ever-popular GTA franchise. However, Tommy Vercetti is nowhere to be found, and you won't be playing in an overly-80s or 90s environment. Instead, Grand Theft Auto IV propels gamers into an all-new version of Liberty City, a living, breathing environment inspired by the greatest city in the real world -- New York. Playing as Eastern European immigrant Niko Ballic, you'll find out firsthand just what it's like to be a strange person in an even stranger land.

It's true. GTA: San Andreas had a bigger environment to explore than Grand Theft Auto IV. But you've never seen a more densely-populated, detailed and engaging environment in any other videogame, ever. That's where our guide comes in. Not only is there a main quest in the game that will take you around forty hours of gameplay to complete, but there are so many side quests, optional missions and jobs, and so much more, that finding it all on your own isn't only a daunting proposition. It's pretty much impossible.

Are you curious how to get through a mission with Little Jacob? Are you wondering why your techniques running jobs in Roman's cab just aren't working? Are you interested in making your relationship with Michelle last? Well, we can answer all of those questions and a plethora more, because this is easily one of the most detailed guides in IGN Guides' ten year history.

In this Grand Theft Auto IV strategy guide, you'll find:

  • BASICS // We'll help you survive a day in Liberty City.
  • THE CITY // All five boroughs are carefully examined.
  • VEHICLES & ARSENAL // For brutal murders and heinous car jackings.
  • WALKTHROUGH // Our massive Grand Theft Auto 4 walkthrough.
  • SIDE QUESTS // More optional quests than you can shake a pistol at.
  • RELATIONSHIPS // Nurture your relationships, or mess them up beyond recognition.
  • MULTIPLAYER // Why kill the CPU when you can kill your friends instead?
  • SECRETS // Liberty City is chock full of 'em.

Unlockable: Statue of Happiness Shirt

Head over to the Statue of Happiness and climb up as far as you can go. Head around the left side of the statue from where you entered. When you do this, the game will pause briefly and load a new shirt that your character will be wearing, a nice souvenir for visiting the statue!

Hint: Restart A Dead Car

If your car gets horribly damaged and stalls or refuses to start, call 911 on your cell phone. When they pick up, hang up your phone, and your car should start once more!

Hint: Free Taxi Rides

Here's a great way to get a free taxi fare. Hail a taxi and get inside, and head to your destination. Right before you get to your destination, bust out the back window and point your gun out of the window (using the corresponding controls). Doing so will freak the taxi driver out. He'll stop the car and run away, leaving you near your destination without forcing you to pay for the ride.

Hint: Easy Money

Head to an ATM anywhere in the city, and cause a traffic jam in the area. Wait for someone to approach the ATM and take money out of it, and then eliminate that person. The traffic jam should ensure that no ambulance can reach the injured person, so if you run a short distance away and return, you can grab the money that dead person dropped over and over again.

Hint: Access Used Cheats Easily

Almost always, when you enter a cheat into your cell phone, you can access it automatically from the phone's main menu ("Cheats"), so you don't have to enter these obscure phone numbers more than once.

Hint: Long-Lasting Fire Truck

Fire trucks are awesome vehicles to use to cause complete and utter destruction in Liberty City. But, even these vehicles are susceptible to damage. Oddly, if the fire truck catches on fire and is about to explode, you can actually utilize the fire truck's very own water source to put its own fire out. Nice!

Easter Egg: Prank Calls

Here's something funny to try. During your adventure through Liberty City, you may find phone numbers written in inconspicuous places, such as on the side of a building or in the subway. If you dial these numbers, you'll usually get someone on the other end who you can subsequently prank.

Easter Egg: Statue of Happiness

Head to the Statue of Happiness on Happiness Island via helicopter. Have the helicopter drop you off on the very top of the statue. You'll find a sign up there that states "No Hidden Content Beyond This Point", but it's a lie. If you head inside of the statue from this area, you'll find an actual beating heart inside the statue. How ridiculously creepy!

Easter Egg: Fire Truck Madness

If you boost a fire truck, press the fire button while driving around. This will allow you to shoot the super-powerful water cannon at anyone around you. Watching people react to getting shot with high-speed water is hilarious.
