Smallville Exclusive: Kara's Future Is Up, Up in the Air

A new development tempers the good news about Allison Mack re-signing, which itself improved the mood after Michael Rosenbaum's Smallvile departure was confirmed: Laura Vandervoort's status as Kara is as up-in-the-air as, well, Supergirl in flight.

As fans noticed in the CW's upfronts announcement earlier this week, "They announced the cast... and I'm not a part of it," Vandervoort tells me, letting out a self-effacing laugh. "We were all surprised when they chose not to bring me back as a regular, but I'm sure I'll be back for one or two [episodes]!"

Looking at the bright side, she notes, "The show is about Clark Kent, and I was honored to be a part of it. I mean, my character became more than it was supposed to be. She ended up sticking around the entire season." Stories even surfaced a while ago suggesting that when Tom Welling hangs up his red jacket and blue tee, Kara might be spun off into her own series.

In the meantime, Vandervoort has a hot summer planned literally. She's now in Hawaii filming Into the Blue 2, a follow-up to the guilty pleasure starring Paul Walker and Jessica Alba. Chris Carmack (The O.C.) plays LV's partner in deep-sea diving and more. "We have a great cast, including also Marsha Thomason (Lost) and David Anders (Heroes)," she shares. "We're very lucky." Comparing Blue 2 to the eye candy-filled original, she says, "This is more of a suspense thriller. But yes, everyone is in bathing suits and stuff like that!"

Oh, I'm sooooo Happy! No offense to Laura Vandervoot, but Kara served NO PURPOSE this season.

She was supposed to help train Clark, or help him reach his destiny, but all we got was 2 minutes of her trying to teach him how to fly and that was it.

Kara appeared, then disappeared. Came back then left again.

If I don't see her again, I won't be sad.

I'd rather Clark reach for his destiny HIMSELF. Now that Lana is gone as well, maybe the show will stop the dreary soap-operaish tone.

Well one thing I'm not sad aboot is not having to hear her Canadian accent anymore. At first I thought it was funny, but after a while it started to take me oot of the show. She needs to work on that if she wants to make it in Hollywood.

This is great news!! I admit I don't know the whole history of comic book Superman so I found that the character of Kara served no purpose whatsoever on Smallville. I would much rather see more of Clark; he has hardly been on the show this season and the show is supposed to be about him!

That's too bad. They kind of wasted her character this season. Laura Vandervoort seems like a sweetheart and I hope she will be back. She did a great job in last night's finale.

meh, its just giving me more reasons not to tune back in. I actually liked the charcter and the actress a lot. Brianic Bizzaro and Kara were the only 3 highlights of this last season. And all 3 are gone. Green Arrow joing or return of Kara and or Brianic, one of those three things need to happen for my interest to be back in the show.

As long as LV is around for all of season 4 of "Instant Star" (premiering on The-N on JUNE 2nd!), I'm happy.

Chloe gone would stop us tuning in. Kara gone? No biggie there. Dull portrayal of a dull realization of the character.

That is the worst news I heard all week. I like Kara around. She needs to be around to show Clark not to be a wuss. Show him how to fly. And I don't want to hear the "no tights or flights" crap either.

Laura gave the show a real pick me up. More ways than one.

What else is she in? I don't get Instant Star.

So:

Tom Welling: 22 episodes
Allison Mack (gah me): 22 episodes
Erica Durance STILL: 13 episodes
Aaron Ashmore: 13 episodes
No Michael Rosenbaum
Kristin Kruek: 5 episodes
No Laura Vandervoort
Doomvis: 13 episodes probably
Tess: 13 episodes probably maybe 22 (which will suck for Erica Durance)
Super Chloe and Brainless Clark show: 22 episodes
A kick on the TV: Priceless

For all the rest exist Ugly Betty: available in ALL USA

Can someone PLEASE listen to us and find out why or how Erica Durance is not getting a full season??

bluegrumpy: "She did a great job in last night's finale."

Ya think? I don't know, it was the same old, same old for me. Speaking of which, I'm STILL waiting for James to recap it so we can talk about it!

Kara did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for the show. Well, except as eye-candy for the guys that watch. And I, too, was getting irked with her Canadian accent that got stronger with each episode.

I thought Michael Rosenbaum was going to appear in some 11 episodes? You mean, he TOTALLY quit? Bummer. :(

Noooo. :(
That means Clark has no family left on the show anymore. :(

duskwillow: "That means Clark has no family left on the show anymore."

Kara was hardly on the show for most of the season, so that doesn't bother me at all.

With the huge cut in the cast, maybe Annette O'Toole can make some cameo appearances? Martha's still alive.

Good. Laura V. was completely unable to pull off the role anyway.
