A Day at the YDN

9:00 am -- 6:00 pm: News reporters and photographers spend the day collecting news and taking photos.

6:15 pm: The editorial board gathers at nightly "doping" meetings to decide what stories will be on the next day's front page. The final decision about story placement is based a number of factors, including the relevance of the story to the Yale community, the availability of photos or other graphics, the frequency and placement of the News' past coverage of the topic, and the quality of the final article. The top five or six articles that day are placed on page one, with the rest falling inside the paper.

6:45 pm: Three nights a week, the editorial board gathers for meetings at which the Editor in Chief and Editorials editor solicit their opinion for the next day's staff editorial, known as the "masthead" or "News' View." The News' View columns reflect the view of the majority of the board but are typically written by the Editor in Chief with the help of the Editorials Editor.

9:00 pm: Reporter deadline. By this point, all reporters have filed their copy for the evening and are working with their desk editors to perfect the stories.

9:00 pm - 1 am: The copy editors review each story to ensure that it conforms to our newspaper's styleguide, and the Production & Design desk is hard at work laying out the paper. The Managing Editors and Editor in Chief read over the next day's stories to assure the quality and accuracy of everything that will be published.

1:30 am: Final Deadline. The paper must be final copied and sent to our printer in Meriden, Conn. by this time in order for the paper to be delivered before breakfast that morning.
