A peak audience of 14.6 million viewers watched Manchester United's UEFA Champions League Final victory over Chelsea last night live on ITV1.
The figure - a 60 per cent share of viewers - makes it the most watched television moment of the year to date.
Joy for United in Moscow and ITV1 at home
11.1 million (46 percent share) watched all of the live match coverage, which was drawn at 1-1 at full time before going to extra time and then a penalty shoot out.
9.6 million (43 percent share) watched the entire programme from 7:00 to 11:15pm.
Figures released today also reveal that an average of 6.2 million watched ITV1’ s live coverage across the 2007-8 Champions League season – making it the most watched season since 2002-3.
Mark Sharman, ITV Director of News and Sport, said: “I’m delighted that almost fifteen million watched ITV1’s coverage of the final – crowning a superb season of Champions League football in which there has been an unprecedented level of British success.
“The viewing figures once again reaffirm the power of top level football events on free-to-air television in uniting mass audiences.”
